Welcome
Story of the individuals who drive vehicles backwards.Set up to the fact that we are like that with ourselves.
Before we get going let me set this up.

3 Main Truths

We need Scripture to understand life.We need Scripture to understand Scripture. We need Scripture to apply Scripture. Peter wrote this to a vague audience. Really he wrote to believers. I know that tonight there are some of us in here who are walking with the Lord and there are some of us who do not know Jesus like that. That’s okay. In order to understand this letter better here’s how we’re gonna do that. Through the lens and life of Peter. Called - “normal guy fishing” and was called. Just like me. Normal kid. Normal church night and Jesus met me and asked me to Follow Him. Part of the “sent.” Was a part of the mission of Jesus. Did Jesus’ work on Earth. With Jesus feeding 5,000 & 4,000. Witnessed a crazy miracle. Walked on water! Experienced a child-like faith in Jesus.Affirmed by confession and also called Satan! Just like us…on a high point following the Lord and rebuked the next day. Witnessed transfiguration and heard audible voice of God.
The Apostle Peter writing to a vague group of believers. Let’s ask the question, who is/was Peter? This is a big and important question. Let’s answer this as best as possible. Peter was...

We need Scripture to understand “life.”

Called - normal guy fishing and was called.
Part of the “sent.”
He’s a part of Jesus sending them out, warning them of persecution, encouragement to have no fear, to remember the cost, and to remember the reward.
With Jesus feeding 5,000 & 4,000.
- He’s a part of Jesus feeding the 5,000 and he’s the guy who stepped out of the boat to walk on water!
Walked on water!
Jesus affirms Peter’s confession of Jesus as “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus also tells Peter right after, that:
Affirmed by confession and also called Satan!
Matthew 16:18–19 ESV
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Matthew 16:
Witnessed transfiguration and heard audible voice of God.
Matthew
In 1 Peter we see that he was writing to a specific group throughout the regions of what’s known as Turkey today. We see that in:
1 Peter 1:1 ESV
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
Peter wrote to believers to reveal that God’s granted all that we need to know about life through His Word. The word “life,” Greek word “Zoe.” The word used here to describe life is the very word that means the course of existence for an individual or the actions and events that occur in living.
ESVThe earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.
However, in
2 Peter 1:1 ESV
Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
And...
ESVIn the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Peter’s writing to those who have been saved by Jesus. 2 things here:
Believers - used their mouths to say Jesus is King and trust him to save me.
Peter understood this in writing to this church because of the life Jesus revealed to him before ascending to heaven. Jesus literally sent them out in regards to normal everyday life when he sent them out in..
Non-believers - use their mouths to
ESVThese twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. As you enter the house, greet it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
Peter is specifically writing to those who believe and trust in Jesus as Lord and savior of their life and have also repented of their sins.
Tonight, there are most likely believers and non-believers in this audience. That’s good. We’re going to see why Scripture is so necessary for both the believer and non-believer tonight by looking into this letter.
When Peter was wrote this letter by the Holy Spirit, he was writing to an audience of people who were struggling to not believe:
World is made of chance.
If God was in control then that means we’re not really “free.”
Since the world just randomly happened, there’s no such thing as prophecy and even the ones given won’t be fulfilled.
Injustice in the world shows that there cannot be a God.
So we’re going to read the text, figure out what it means, and ask how does it apply to us.
ESVFor you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

We need Scripture to understand Scripture.

Peter reminded the audience of the promises of God to understand the promise of the knowledge of Jesus.
ESVHis divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
ESVby which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.
The promises of God reveal the promise of Jesus from God.

We need Scripture to apply Scripture.

We need the scriptures to escape!
ESVby which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

How do we apply this?

Because God has granted all things through knowing Jesus, we need to understand we were made to worship Him IN ALL THINGS. Just like says, Jesus has called us to this and are you answering or rejecting it? Come talk to one of us afterwards if you want to answer this call.Knowing God’s Word and His promises, equips us to partake in the divine nature which is a Spirit filled life killin’ it for Jesus. That means saying “yes,” to reading your Bibles and “no” to sin. Come talk to us as well if you think you need help in this area.

Conclusion

ESVTherefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder,
