Reverent Fear
Open your Bibles to
1 Peter 1:17-21
As you find your place to take a moment to remind you a few things
1.
Peter is writing to people who are hurting and suffering, he is writing to individuals who are being ridiculed and persecuted because they live for Jesus Christ.
Remember during this point in history the believers were being savagely persecuted so much that they had to flee for the life leaving behind everything they knew.
So, Peter wanted to take this opportunity to write them a letter to encourage them to carry on their faith.
2.
He opened his letter was a message of hope.
Reminding them that……..
· They are God’s chosen people
· covered in the blood of Jesus
· strangers passing by
3. he then reminds them to keep their eyes focus on the salvation of their souls in order that they may find hope in their persecution because of who they are in Jesus
4. if you remember last week Peter transitions from the idea of just grasping the hope to action
5. he reminds the readers that not only are they to focus on the hope that they have in Jesus but they must prepare their mind
· he starts off by telling them to gird up the loins of reminds in order that they can remain obedient to the walk with God
· he then moved to holiness urging them to focus on the fact that they should strive to remain pure, righteous and sinless as God is
this morning he takes the chance to remind the readers that if they are going to live through suffering and persecution they must give their life to God.
Introduction
The idea in these verses is simple….
If a man fears God, he will be able to stand against the temptation of this world and endure the trials of life.
The problem is though the psychologically we try to program ourselves to stay away from fear
Most people don’t like to even talk about Fear
And sadly because of this most preachers shy away from ever preaching on the subject
However, scripture encourages us as believers to develop a healthy fear of God
Having a reverent Fear of God is a good thing
the Bible describes the fear of God in two ways
1. in one sense, the fear God means to hold him in fear, dread, terror.
2. In the other sense, it means to
· hold him in awe and reverence
· His holiness,
· His power,
· His knowledge,
· His wisdom,
· His judgment,
· and His wrath
another word scripture encourages us as believers reverence God and hold God in the highest esteem and honor.
The reason we should do this is summed up really in verse 17 notice how it says “if you call”
in other words Peter say and only if a man reverent is God only worship and serve God the way he should.
As believers we should have a fair reverent and all
we should have a fear that stir us up to love God with the deepest of our emotions
a fear that causes us to honor him and esteem him
however, if a man fails to reverence a lower God, then he must fear the judgment and wrath of God
that is the subject of the passages we just read
Peter tells us we are to live on earth and reverence and fear to God
1. first of all because as believers we call him father
2. secondly because he will judge the world
3. thirdly because we are strangers and pilgrims on earth
4. also because we have been redeemed
5. and will wrap it up with the fact that we should be and reverence at all of God because he raised up Christ in order that we may be saved
so the first reason Peter gives that we should relive and reverence in all God
is
Because we call him father
think about children are born with a natural tendency to have reverence towards her father
in fact, if you look up the word reverence the definition is to hold one’s father in the highest esteem and honor and respect him.
A child who honors and respects his father will stop at nothing to try to please his father
if we do this for our earthly fathers how much more should we do this for our heavenly father
after all scripture uses these words to describe how great of a father he is
who has adopted us as his children to the Lord Jesus Christ
so Peter’s point is because we call him father and we love him ….
· we should honor and respect him
· we should hold him in the highest of esteem
· and we should strive to please not bring pain to his heart
really I think if you Soma verse 17 what Peter is saying is that if you love God the father can stay true to
he is saying if you love God the father and stand up against all trials and persecutions
stand up against temptations
stand up against the evils of this life
and call upon your father for help and strength
and most importantly show reverence and honor to him by living for Him
Peter continues by telling us that as believers we should have reverence towards God
Because he shall judge the world
as believers we should have a reverent fear and all of God because we know that he has saved us from the consequences of our sin.
Revelation makes it very clear that the judgment God will strike fear and dread in the eyes of all
in fact I would argue that the human mind cannot even begin to picture how awful and frightening the final judgment will be when all those who do not believe in God or cut off for eternity
there are three things that we know about the judgment of God from Scriptures
1. no one is going to escape judgment.
Every single person one day stand before God and be judged.
2. The other thing we know about the day of judgment is we will stand before God and he will judge us based on our works.
This is not to say the worst gets us to heaven but our works will reveal whether we truly trusted in Christ are if we only said that we trusted in Christ.
A person is saved by faith in Christ.
But it is their faith in Christ that drives him to continue living for Christ
in other words a man who is truly saved will live for Christ
it’s simple church a person who really believes will follow his beliefs one who does not just utters words
3. the third thing that we know about the date of judgment is God is not a partial judge
· he has no favorites
· it didn’t matter where you come from
· how rich you are or how poor your
· no one will be shown favoritism
Peter, Paul, Martin Luther, Billy Graham, George Washington, Genghis Khan, Hitler, and every other human being who is ever lived will be judged on equal basis
2 cor.
5:10
Peter then reminds his readers that they should have reverence for God
Because they are just sojourners on earth
The word sojourners means to do alongside, or be passing by.
The idea of this is a pilgrim or stranger who is in a foreign country and is only dwelling there for a brief period of time.
In other words Peter is telling us because we believe in Jesus and have put our faith in him earth is not our permanent residence.
He reminds us that we are only passing through earth to get to a better world.
Here’s the thing about being a pilgrim in a foreign land
where does your heart stay?
on home.
As believers we are to fix our thoughts on heaven realizing there we will find our permanent home.
