Peter is going back.
Peter has decided to go fishing, he is discouraged and reverting back to his old ways.
They are on the sea of Galilee fishing and have been fishing all night.
Beautiful setting
Western shoreline of the Sea of Galilee.
The large mountain in the right-center is Mount Arbel.
The city of Magdala (Taricheae / Magadan / Dalmanutha) lies beneath its cliff face.
john 21:1-
s
Jesus had told them to wait for him at the sea and Peter got tired of waiting and went fishing.
Fished all night and caught nothing.
What does this mean to us today?
sometimes we get impatient waiting on God’s plan.
we decide to go on our own and with good intentions start to do the work of the Church.
not realizing that we are not following Jesus’ plan, we see little results.
the results are not very good.
they were fishermen but they were fishing for the wrong thing.
We are fishers for men!
So Jesus shows up and gets them on the right track.
There is a two part meaning here.
They caught 153 fish.
Why 153?
This number was not a mistake.
In the Hebrew Numerical Alphabet the number 153 simply means
I AM HE!
This was not a coincidence.
everything God does has meaning.
Second meaning.
We need to be in the will of God.
Following his plan for our Church!
What is His will for the Church?
Jesus confirms that in the next set of text.
He
john 21:
Jesus told Peter to feed his Lambs.
What is a Lamb?
A baby sheep, is fed by another sheep.
he is telling him as a Christian its his Job to raise up other Christians the same a Jesus has done him,
He has now moved from a Disciple to a Disciple maker.
our ultimate goal should be to be a disciple, then to make other Disciples.
He didn’t stop there.
john 21:
Who tends sheep?
the Shepard.
he is setting Peter apart from the flock not as a sheep but a Shepard.
he is charging him to take care of the sheep, to feed them, protect them, and lead them.
its a unique situation because on one end Peter is a sheep feeding lambs but at the same time he is a Shepard tending the flock.
the point is.
SHEEP MAKE SHEEP!!
The Shepard s do not make sheep, sheep do.
this is the mission of the church, to make other sheep and feed the lambs.
