1.
The Master (2:1-2)
It was reported that He was at home in Capernaum.
Most likely this is Peter’s house.
That’s where Jesus had gone after preaching on a Sabbath just a few weeks before and apparently spent the night.
(1:29-39)
Peter opened up his home to the Lord and it became the Master’s dwelling.
One of the major themes of Scripture is the dwelling place of God.
In the Old Testament, the sign of God’s presence was marked by the Glory Cloud.
When Christ dwelled on earth is was announced by angels and the Trinity.
Now his dwelling place is with believers, (ESV) “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?
You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price.
So glorify God in your body.
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?
You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price.
So glorify God in your body.
Signs that Jesus is in a location:
Where Jesus is at home people gather.
Jesus is attractive to those in need.
Where relationships were broken, they begin to be mended.
Where Jesus is at home the Word is preached.
Jesus always sought to bring people back into fellowship with the Father.
Is it evident that Christ is in our lives, our families, our church?
2. The Men (2:3-9)
The Four Men
They took initiative.
They had a friend that needed Jesus and they decided to carry him to Jesus.
They were determined.
They sought a way through the roof when the door seemed blocked.
Bringing people to Jesus is often a messy task, but it must take priority over comfort.
They had faith.
Jesus recognized their faith and responded.
The Paralytic Man
He is helpless and dependent upon others.
Scripture says that we are dead in our sins.
We are unable to help ourselves and dependent upon the proclamation of the Gospel and the power of Christ to save us.
Jesus emphasizes the man’s greatest need, forgiveness.
We don’t know how he was paralyzed, we don’t know what kind of man he was, but Jesus saw his true condition, a man who needed forgiveness of sins.
Jesus addressed the man’s condition by saying “Your sins ARE FORGIVEN (present, passive) you.”
That means that someone else had to do the forgiving and that he was forgiven in that moment.
4. The Murmuring Scribes (2:6-9)
The Murmuring Men
There are always those in a crowd who doubt the work and power of God.
They justified their inner thoughts on “theological grounds” because they had already judged that Jesus was just a man.
“Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
They did not recognize Christ as the Messiah.
Jesus proved his Deity by knowing their thoughts.
He questioned their understanding of God’s work, “What is easier…?”
From man’s perspective it is easier to say something with no physical proof.
From God’s perspective, the forgiveness of sins would require the greater work.
3. The Miracle (2:10-12)
“So that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...”
This is why Christ came and is the greatest miracle of all!
“Rise!”
A picture of the new birth, (quickened and made alive in Christ).
“Take up your bed!”
A picture of cleansing from the old way of life.
It is no longer needed.
“Go home!”
But is is a home that has been changed, because its occupant has met the Master.

The four who brought the lame man?
Are you engaged in bringing others to the Master?
