INTRODUCTION:

1. The King has provided His knights with everything that is needed to win the war:

2 Peter 1:1–4 NKJV
1 Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

A. The Armor- (The ability to protect ourselves)

B. The Sword-Ephesians 6:17b (The ability to fight)

C. Instructions on how to fight the war- (The ability to win the war)

2. gives three instructions to the knight of God.

Ephesians 6:18–20 NKJV
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

A. Pray always.

B. Be watchful for all the saints.

C. Open your mouth boldly.

1. Paul asked the Church at Ephesus to pray three things for him:

A. That God would tell him what to speak.

B. That he may open his mouth boldly.

C. That he may speak as he ought to speak.

BODY:

1. OPEN YOUR MOUTH BOLDLY.

A. That God would tell him what to speak.

Ephesians 6:19 NKJV
19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,
Eph 6.18

1. Being that Paul was an apostle, he was asking the church to pray that he be given miraculous inspiration.

John 14:26 NKJV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Jn 14.

A. Paul asked the church at Ephesus to pray this, because he understood the necessity of teaching God’s Word properly.

James 3:1 NKJV
1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.

B. The church still has a need to pray for utterance to be given to us today, because God’s Word still needs to be taught properly.

2 Peter 2:1–2 NKJV
1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.
1. However, the church no longer has a need to pray for miraculous inspiration, because we have the completed Word of God.
1 Corinthians 13:10 NKJV
10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
2. The church of the first century did not have the completed Word of God, so they needed the apostles to guide them.
Acts 2:47 NKJV
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
Acts 2:42 NKJV
42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
3. The apostles and the other inspired writers of the New Testament recorded the Scriptures to guide us today on how to conduct ourselves.
1 Timothy 3:15 NKJV
15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
4. Today, we do have the completed Word of God; all we need to do is go to it for guidance.
Psalm 119:105 NKJV
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

2. We still need to pray for God to tell us what to speak, just differently than Paul.

1 Peter 4:11 NKJV
11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

A. Jesus directly chose Paul to be the apostle to the Gentiles, appearing to him on the road to Damascus.

Acts 9:4 NKJV
4 Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”
Galatians 2:7–8 NKJV
7 But on the contrary, when they saw that the gospel for the uncircumcised had been committed to me, as the gospel for the circumcised was to Peter 8 (for He who worked effectively in Peter for the apostleship to the circumcised also worked effectively in me toward the Gentiles),

B. Peter would acknowledge Paul’s inspiration as well.

2 Peter 3:14–15 NKJV
14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you,
2 Pt 3.14-15
1. Paul was given the wisdom to write the Scriptures by his prayer and by the prayers of the church.
2. Some of the things Paul would write in his letters would be hard to understand.
2 Peter 3:16–17 NKJV
16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;
3. Therefore, we need to pray for wisdom to understand.
James 1:5 NKJV
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

3. God tells us what to speak today through His Word.

John 17:17 NKJV
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

A. He does not whisper in our ears or give us some ambiguous feeling.

1. When Christ died the Old Law passed away.

Colossians 2:14 NKJV
14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
1. Oftentimes, we hear people talking about their feelings or witnessing.

2. Jesus had promised to build His Church and now it was here.

Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV
9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?
Proverbs 28:26 NKJV
26 He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.
Jer
Proverbs
Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
2. He does not give us what to say by something that changes as often as our own feelings.

3. but because the old law was dead they would need a new law.

Luke 21:33 NKJV
33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

B. That he may open his mouth boldly.

1. We need to understand that a closed mouth does not help the lost.

Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

2. If we, as the church, keep our mouths closed, the lost will remain lost.

Romans 10:14 NKJV
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?

3. You might say, ‘If I open my mouth and teach the gospel the way that it is meant to be taught, then people will persecute me.’

2 Timothy 4:6 NKJV
6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.

A. But do we persuade men or God?

Galatians 1:10 NKJV
10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.
1. We need to remember that there will be no cowards in heaven.
Revelation 21:8 NKJV
8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
2. Remember what Paul told the Galatians.
Galatians 4:16 NKJV
16 Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?
3. If we want the church to grow, we must be willing to tell the world what it doesn’t want to hear.
James
James 4:4 NKJV
4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

C. That he may speak as he ought to speak.

1. We have a responsibility to open our mouths.

2. Paul said he preached the gospel because necessity was laid upon him.

1 Corinthians 9:16 NKJV
16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!

A. Why did Paul write this?

1 Corinthians 9:17 NKJV
17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship.
1. It was because he knew whether he was comfortable with it or not, it was entrusted to him.
1 Cor 9.17

B. The Word of God has been entrusted to all of us.

2 Corinthians 4:7 NKJV
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.
1. We don’t have the option of keeping our mouths closed; it should burn inside our bones when we try to contain it.
Jeremiah 20:9 NKJV
9 Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.
2. We don’t have the option of keeping our mouths closed, because Jesus commanded us to speak up.
Mark 16:15–16 NKJV
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Mark 15:15–16 NKJV
15 So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified. 16 Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.
3. We don’t have the option of keeping our mouths closed, because Paul, by inspiration, commanded us to speak up.
Ephesians 4:15 NKJV
15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—
Romans 10:14 NKJV
14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
2 Timothy 4:2 NKJV
2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
1 Timothy 4:6 NKJV
6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.
4. We don’t have the option of keeping our mouths closed, because Peter, by inspiration, commanded us to speak up.
1 Peter 3:15 NKJV
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

CONCLUSION:

1. Are you praying and asking others to pray:

1. Do you understand God does this through His Word today?

B. That I may open my mouth boldly?

1. Do you understand what it means to open your mouth boldly?

C. That I may speak as I ought to speak?
