Galatians 6:1–5 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load.
Galatians 6:1–5 NIV
Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.

Caught up

Dog wrapped up in a garden hose - the dog had gotten himself into a real mess
Story of fishing on the reserve and my job was to untangle the fish from the net - The fish fight to get out but inevitably get more tangled the harder they fight
We were all “caught or caught-up” in sin
If you want a description of what sin is you can look to the 10 commandments or go back to

Slide Galatians 5:19-21

Galatians 5:19–21 NIV
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
We were living by desire - doing what we wanted, what felt good what we thought was right

We were living by desire - doing what we wanted, what felt good what we thought was right
The first step in becoming “Spiritual” is recognizing that Christ’s desire and our desire are in opposition to one another
Faith in Christ’s death and resurrection has given those who believe and confess a new spiritual life in which we continually examine ourselves and model goodness.
If you are a believer you are a spiritual being free from the eternal consequences of your past
You have as well be given a responsibility to search out the sin in your life
As you become aware of the sin in your life you will as well become aware of the sin in other peoples lives.

Getting caught up

Slide - Keep watch on yourself lest you be tempted

How do you respond to an awareness of sin?
When someone goes and steals a bunch of cash do you secretly wish that you had that money?
Giving room in your thought life for
When someone is being promiscuous? Are you secretly envious?
When people seem to reject Jesus yet continue on in their life doing whatever they want and maybe even seem to be rewarded for their sinful way of life - how do you respond to that?
We can be tempted by:
Our own thoughts about others sin
Our thoughts about our past lives
We can even get caught up by believing that we are better because we are not sinning like “those people”
So far the book of Galatians has dealt with issues of the Law and leaders who had come along and tried to impose
Galatians
Galatians 6:1 NIV
1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
Paul had been
So what does it mean to be Spiritual?
It means that we live with an observable, growing expression of the fruit of the Spirit
If anyone is caught in a sin those who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness
Gentleness is the same way that Jesus responded to you when you surrendered your life to him
This is proof of life - Do you respond to sin differently than you did before you knew Jesus !
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Love Joy Peace Kindness Goodness Faithfulness. Gentleness Self-control
The spiritual person will have these charateristics inceasingly in thier life.

Slide - You who are Spiritual

What does it mean to be spiritual
As mentioned earlier you must first believe in Jesus Christ as your saviour
A spiritual person will deeply believe in the existence of an intimate God, and concede Jesus has a sovereign right over his life
The spiritual person will acknowledge that he does not possess the inherent wisdom to know how to conduct his life
The spiritual man and woman will strive more than anything else to obey God.
The spiritual person views things in terms of eternity, not time. For example, he may experience hardships and heartaches now, but he understands “that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us later on
A spiritual individual subordinates the material to higher interests. He sets his mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth (). He does not become inordinately preoccupied with “things” of a material nature. Rather, he seeks foremost the kingdom of God (), and trusts the Lord to provide his needs (in conjunction, of course, with exercising personal responsibility – ).
One who is truly spiritual strives for balance in his existence. He does not compartmentalize his service to God by “selective devotion.”
Similarly, in Jesus’ day, the Pharisees would tithe of their smallest garden plants, while leaving undone weightier matters of the law (e.g., justice, mercy, and faith – Mt. 23:23). The Lord did not grant the option of choosing certain areas of obedience and ignoring others.

Check Yourself

It goes beyond our own existence
Christ came to remove our sins from us and our burdens we no longer carry alone
Being a Christian we learn to live with an attitude of “Pay it forward”
The spiritual person person will fulfill the “Law of Christ”
Some are conscientious guardians of theological precision, but exhibit almost no discernible compassion for their kinsmen in the Lord, while others scurry about, immersed in benevolent activity, laboring under the misconception that “grace” exempts from obedience.Check Yourself

Galatians 6:2 ESV
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2 NIV
Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
In order to fulfill the law of Christ you must first be a follower of Christ Jesus said some interesting things as to what it means to be followers
In order to fulfill the law of Christ you must first be a follower of Christ Jesus said some interesting things as to what it means to be followers
Pick up your cross and follow me

Our Choices Our Responsibility

Your cross is not some burden that you carry - the cross represents only one thing to the original readers of these words, a very painful slow agonizing death.
2000 years later we tend to focus on the grace forgiveness and mercy of the cross and that is important but we must never lose sight of the agony and death that the cross held for Christ
We are called to carry that cross ourselves - we die to ourselves and surrender our lives to live for Jesus
Matthew Mark Luke - Fishers of men
The disciples went from being fishermen to following Christ and searching for the lost and leading them into a relationship with Jesus
In all four Gospels Jesus tells us to
Love God and Love one another
Bear one anothers burdens can then have two different applications
Have the salvation of others in your thoughts
Help others overcome their struggles with sin

Our Choices are Our Responsibility but first we must look at our own lives

Galatians 6:3–4 NIV
If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else,
Galatians 6:3–4 ESV
For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.
Galatians 6
Sometimes there is a tendency to let your spirituality cause you to believe that you are somehow “better than” someone else!
We may say “well I am not perfect but I am better than that guy!”
When it comes to a relationship with Jesus it isn’t about “That Guy” it is about you!
How you respond to “that guy is a good gage as to how you have responded to Christ’s grace in your life.
1 John 1:8–10 ESV
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
If you think that you are something you are not you are decived

Slide

Galatians 6:5 ESV
For each will have to bear his own load.
Even though we are saved we are totally dependant on the grace of Christ to establish our goodness (REPEAT THIS)
Test your own actions - ask yourself this
Are my actions pleasing to God
Are my actions building others up
Are my actions a reflection of the fruit of the spirit?
Am I proud of my actions?

Slide - Its all about you

There are two kinds of pride, both good and bad. 'Good pride' represents our dignity and self-respect. 'Bad pride' is the deadly sin of superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.
John C. Maxwell
Matthew Mark and Luke all wrote that Jesus said “Pick up your cross and follow me”

Galatians 6:5 ESV
5 For each will have to bear his own load.
Paul had in chapter 5 addressed that believers ought to live by the Spirit and not by the flesh
It is truely about you !
He set out 2 lists
When the day comes that we stand before Jesus the conversation will be about how you have lived your life, not about how others have lived their lives.
Did you hear the Gospel and respond in faith
Living by the flesh
Did you walk in obedience and follow as commanded by Christ
Did you carry the message of hope to others as commanded by Christ

sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.

Did you love your neighbours as commanded by Christ
Living by the Spirit
How will that conversation end? Well done good and faithful servant?

love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control

It truely is all about you !
