How should we view the Bible? The “good book” I’ve heard it called. What is it? Is it just a book? How should we read it?

I remember arguing with a guy the reliability of the Bible
He was an educated man and a Marine officer
He was asking questions and I could not convince him of the truth
At one point I challenged him to read the book
“How can you argue a book if you haven’t read it.” Academic approach
But more importantly I wanted to us the HS approach
The Bible is more than a book.
Not a mystical symbol
But, it contains the very Words of God
Problem: For many we lack the correct approach to God’s word.
Approaches: History/like any other book, stories/like a murder mystery, Ancient and outdated, Rules for how to live a good life, “What’s in it for me?” Application
Scripture is more important than that. It is bigger than that. It is none of these, yet all of these.
So, how should we approach God’s Word?

The Holy Day of Preparation (The Passover)
On the first day you shall hold a holy assembly, and on the seventh day a holy assembly. No work shall be done on those days. But what everyone needs to eat, that alone may be prepared by you.
The Passover is about to be celebrated
The Jewish leaders who were so consumed by the law of God that they ignore the fact that they kill an innocent man and are focused on the little mundane details that have no significance.
Illus: I liken this to those Christians who seem to ignore the law of God about murder and whose hearts are so hard that abortion seems a legitimate practice to them.
Soldiers broke their legs to finish the death
They pierced his side and did not break his legs
Blood and water - the symbols used to represent the atoning of sin of sin by blood (The new covenant) and the washing away of sin by the water.
Both of these were accomplished in the death of Jesus and in the sacraments today - Baptism and LS point us to Christ and HIs work
He was already dead
The purpose of John telling all of this was for hearers and readers to believe
He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe.

This is obviously John - who refers to himself often this way
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

John continues the theme here about Jesus fulfilling Scripture
Started with Judas in
I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’
Continues with Jesus’ garments
so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,
“They divided my garments among them,
and for my clothing they cast lots.”
So the soldiers did these things,
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
John’s purpose was to prove Jesus was the Messiah and that others would believe in this fact

Jesus is referenced 2 times in this passage
As one whose bones were not broken
He was the ultimate sacrificial lamb
He would be the last necessary sacrifice to God the Father
For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.”

It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones.
They shall leave none of it until the morning, nor break any of its bones; according to all the statute for the Passover they shall keep it.
It was part of Passover to not break the bones for the sole purpose of fulfilling Scripture
This should show us how important it is that God’s word be consistent with the things that actually take place in the world
2. As one whose side was pierced
Jerusalem will mourn for their loss - King of the Jews
“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

Historically, we have referred to these ways of strengthening our faith as the ordinary means of grace. Prayer, the preaching of the Word, and the sacraments are not elaborate or fancy methods of giving us what we need to confirm our trust in Christ. To an outside observer, they do not seem special at all. After all, they make use of rather common things such as human speech, bread, wine, and water. But by faith and the work of the Spirit, these common elements are used to do an uncommon work — the confirmation of our trust in Jesus and the strengthening of our wills to flee from sin and rest in Christ alone.”

Q. 154. What are the outward means whereby Christ communicates to us the benefits of his mediation?
A. The outward and ordinary means whereby Christ communicates to his church the benefits of his mediation, are all his ordinances, especially the word, sacraments, and prayer; all which are made effectual to the elect for their salvation.
John obviously believed this. He saw the importance of writing down the things that happened and how Jesus fulfilled them in order that men may believe
He knew that what he was witnessing needed to be written and recorded to encourage men to believe
He did not know the depth obviously but he was led by the HS to know the importance
It shows us the importance - God has set ordinary language and writing down as His method of communicating and applying salvation
