Intro: It is somewhat amazing to me to consider the misunderstandings and abuse that have occurred concerning the Lord’s Supper, both today and in the 1st century.
We will discuss the NT pattern, some abuses, and God’s intended purpose for the LS.
Intro: It is somewhat amazing to me to consider the misunderstandings and abuse that have occurred concerning the Lord’s Supper, both today and in the 1st century.
We will discuss the NT pattern, some abuses, and God’s intended purpose for the LS.
I) NT pattern
Patterned after the Passover, “fulfilled in the kingdom” – – Passover was the most important feast of Israel – ; – and was a symbol of God’s deliverance –
Because it was so closely tied to the Passover, we know that unleavened bread and unfermented fruit of the vine are to be used in celebrating the Lord’s Supper today
Bread is symbolic of His body, which is sacrificed for us – – more than the physical body that died on the cross, it is the entire life He sacrificed from the beginning of His ministry – ,
The fruit of the vine is symbolic of the blood shed to consecrate the covenant – – again for our sakes to forgive our sins –
II) Abuses
Made into common meal – – or even a cause for distinction between brethren, which showed their selfish attitude
Trans-substantiation, or con-substantiation, where the literal body and blood of Jesus replaces the bread and juice or coexists with them – – there is only one sacrifice, not a repeated sacrifice
Fruit of the vine taken by priest in proxy – – all of you
Only practiced on special occasions (to keep from becoming common)
Meaningless ritual to be performed each week
Considered as a shield against sin –
Unable to partake until sinless –
III) Purpose of Lord’s Supper
Remember the death of the Christ – – we can never forget the greatest act of love ever shown –
Sharing in the covenant of Christ – – as baptism is our acceptance of the covenant, communion is our continual reaffirmation, as the Passover was to Israel – ,
Proclamation of Jesus’ death – – speaks to our brethren and the world, and maybe to ourselves
Concl: Of course, Satan is behind these efforts to change the Lord’s Supper to something it was never intended to be.
But, those efforts will fail.
God will be glorified.
