The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Volume 8: Matthew, Mark, Luke 10. Choosing the Twelve Apostles (6:12–16)

Jesus spent an entire night in prayer, a sure indication that the circumstances were pressing: the preceding controversy, the resultant threatening atmosphere, and the selection to be made of the twelve apostles. The second clause indicates that the first was not a routine devotional exercise

The atmosphere was threatening
There was a buzz of persecution in the air
It was now time Jesus would choose the 12 that would learn of Him and carry on His mission after hew was gone.
he already had been saved and would follow Jesus having left his nets.
But now he would go from a follower to an apostle. he would have the full authority to Acts on behalf of Jesus.
What decision to make.

The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Volume 8: Matthew, Mark, Luke 10. Choosing the Twelve Apostles (6:12–16)

How many of us Christians today have ever spent a whole night in prayer? In his prayer life, as in all else, the Lord Jesus stands far above even the best of us whose words about prayer need to be matched by the consistent practice of it.

He spent an entire night in prayer. Jesus had a large number of disciples and from those He picked 12 who were to be close to Him. These were specifically called apostles (apostolous) as opposed to the term disciples (mathētas). Disciples were followers, but apostles were those sent out as messengers with delegated authority

What drives you to prayer:
sickness
broken marriage
finances
stress

Hezekiah’s prayer
2 Kings 20:1–2 KJV 1900
In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, saying,

Then answer
2 Kings 20:5 KJV 1900
Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord.
Notice : I have heard thy prayer and seen thy tears.

What Drives you to pray?

II Deciding on Peter

Luke 6:13 KJV 1900
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;
luke 6.13
it was now day after a night of prayer it was time to make a decision.
There comes a time we must put feet to our prayers.
Jesus had prayed all night and not it was time to act.
Design ing a building, all the parties have been contacted and the prints are ready. meetings held and presented to the public.
Then all of a sudden the project is squelched and tabled.

Believer’s Bible Commentary F. Twelve Disciples Chosen (6:12–19)

Jesus spent all night in prayer before choosing the twelve. What a rebuke this is to our impulsiveness and independence of God! Luke is the only evangelist who mentions this night of prayer.

Nehemiah 1:11 KJV 1900
O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.
Nehemiah 2:8 KJV 1900
And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
nemeiah 2.8
One of the keys to the Christian life is to Act on the prayers we make.
Jesus left the mountain immediately and name the apostles.
There were many followers but the Lord chose Peter and the other 11.

John 14:26 KJV 1900
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Romans 8:26 KJV 1900
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Roamns 8.26
Hebrews 4:15–16 KJV 1900
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

III Disclosing the Answer

Luke 6:17 KJV 1900
And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;
Luke
This would be there first time they would be together and presented. The apostles along with the other disciples would then minister to the crowds.
There was no secret that this group had been selected.....
When God answers a prayer follow through acts on it and let it be known.
Illustration : When moved in my heart to go into the ministry I counseled with my Pastor and put a plan in place to:
disclose decision to family
resign my position at work / income replacement
Develop two year plan to graduate
