Chapter 15 A

So we come back tonight to the Gospel of Mark and with it Chapter 15

So lets begin with chapter 15 and verse 1

Now if you remember from last week certain things happened the night Jesus was arrested.

He was taken to the home of the High Priest

There were members of the Sanhedrin there, elders and Scribes.

It was an unlawful meeting, because it took place under the cover of darkness.

And they made up their mind.

The next morning was only a formality, but it was necessary to give the appearance that the council met in the day time.

Verse 1 begins with it being the early morning, and with it there were a few extra prople that have been called to the meeting, 23 members was necessary to reach a conviction of this death penalty.

So by morning the rest of the group was there, they could hear the concise false witness against Jesus and as a group find him guilty under the law.

Now once everyone was of the same opinion, they proceed with the evil intent of their hearts and bound Jesus to take him to be handed over to Pilate.

It amazes me just how evil the heart of these men were.... to kill a righteous person, the Son of God.

Verse 2-3

So coming to Jesus, Pilate asks Jesus a question… Are you the king of the Jews?

Now interesting enough, they have accused Jesus of Blasphemy in chapter 14,

but here ( ) they bring no such charge upon Jesus.

Why? blasphemy would not have been a charge Pilate would not have even cared about…

They hoped to be able to convince Pilate of Jesus being one who would be a person would would commit treason in the land, and hopefully, if they could do that, Jesus would be put to death.

But if not… they were in for a long day

but here they bring no such charge upon Jesus.

So Pilate asked Jesus if he was guilty of being a King of the Jews… and Jesus said … “You have said so....” what does this phrase mean?

It really is a yes answer, but the qualification is attached.

Yes, but the title is one of your own making....

it was more .... yes, and I am a King.

The king of the Jews ruling was not a bid deal unless it was a challenge against Rome.

But dont forget the chief priests were like annoying gnats pestering Pilate of why Jesus is guilty and deserving of death.

Pilate was amazed and yet it fulfilled Scripture.

Listen to Isaiah 53:7

Yes, Scripture is fulfilled.

Now lets move on.... verses 6-7

Now there was a custom at the time where at their holiest of worship celebrations, the Passover.

The roman authorities would release a person from prison.

Now at this time there was a man named Barabbas, you was a murderer and had taken part in up risings against Rome.

Surely this man deserved to be crucified, He deserved to die.

Now verses 8-10

Now the crowd was asking Pilate to do for them as he had in the past, being the area ruler he could, he has the authority to do so.... Now I like verse 10, Pilate perceived it was out of envy, jealously that the Jews, namely the high priest had delivered Jesus up to Him.

So do you want me to deliver Jesus up to you?

look at verses 11-15

The chief priests wanted to make sure Jesus was not released so they in-sighted the crowd, stirring them up, working up their emotions … release Barabbas...

and when asked about Jesus they said to crucify him...

Can you imagine the injustice here...

and Pilate said by what reason, what has Jesus done to deserve death.

So Pilate wishing to please the crowd, released Barabbas and scourged Jesus and then ordered that he be crucified.

Such a difficult thing to read, to witness in the Scriptures and it was God’s plan, it was Jesus will to obey the father and give HIs life as a ransom for sin.
