Our true self is the person God is creating us to be. While this true self is a gift of God and not something we create, we can participate in its emergence by fixing our hearts and minds on things above.

Notes & Transcripts
2017-08-06 1 HID WITH CHRIST False Self, Real Self, True Self 2 COLOSSIANS 3 1 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. 3 CHRIST IS SEATED 1 What is Jesus doing now at the right hand of the Father? “It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us” (Rom 8:34) What is He praying for? That we would be completely new people in whom He can make his home He will not stop until we are completely renewed (Phil 1:6) 4 SET YOUR HEART/MIND ON THINGS ABOVE 1 Living the Christian life is simply a matter of where we set our minds Every waking moment we have a choice about where, and on what, we will set our minds Where we set our minds and what we think about has a large impact on how we live, how we feel and how we react to the world around us 5 HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD 1 If Christ gave His life for you, and has taken your life into His, then He must be crazy about you! You are one in whom Christ dwells and delights This identity is not uncertain; you did not earn it, so there is nothing you can do to lose it. You are safe; your life is hidden inside of His. This is not wishful thinking, but reality therapy – setting your mind firmly on the truth 6 CHRIST IS YOUR LIFE 1 Jesus is the true source of all life Jesus is also the source of zoe , spiritual life or “eternal life” When I put my confidence in Jesus and began living as his apprentice, a new life emerged in my being In the NT, eternal life starts now, not at death; it is a present possession that even death cannot rob us of This zoe life is eternal, safe and secure, hidden with Christ 7 THE TRUE SELF: REVEALED WITH HIM 1 The true self is revealed within us as the life of Christ infuses our being more and more This true self is characterized by: Peace Freedom Vocation Steadfastness Gentleness LIFE! 1 2017-08-06 LIFE! 8 THE TRUE SELF IS GIFT 1 We created out false self, but the true self is always a gift of God that can only be received We have a role to play in the emergence of the true self (Phil 2:12-13) but it is not a causal role Any willful attempts to make it happen are a move in the opposite direction The more we rest in God’s love –understand, experience and surrender to that love – the more our true self will emerge Not a 5-step process 9 FOCUS ON CHRIST 1 Instead of focusing on defeating sin, focus in knowing Christ personally The expulsive power of a new affection How do we participate in the emergence of the true self? Identify the false self and accept the real self Raising sails Cliff-jumping 10 PRACTICE: RULE OF LIFE 1 A rule of life is set of practices you adopt to set your heart and mind on Christ Not about observing a set of rules in order to make ourselves acceptable before God (that’s legalism) Living life under a certain pattern in order to produce a certain quality of life and character A rule of life is an answer to the question: How do I want to live so I can become who I want to be? 11 PRACTICE: WHY ADOPT A RULE OF LIFE? 1 A rule prevents wasting time considering what to do next A rule enables us to plod along at the slow but steady pace, which accomplishes more than relying on inspiration A rule combines the various spiritual disciplines in an integrated way, each reinforcing the others 12 PRACTICE: A GOOD RULE OF LIFE 1 Personalized Neither too severe nor too lenient It should normally be kept with no fault occasionally, a few faults frequently and if it goes all to pieces very rarely there is little to worry about. Balanced between flexibility and perseverance Specific Holistic Covers all of life (not just “religious” stuff) and address various time frames (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly) 13 SUMMARY “To the degree we honestly face our false self, and live humbly and hopefully in our real self, God releases our true self, deepening our intimacy with Him and others, and propelling us towards 2 2017-08-06 God releases our true self, deepening our intimacy with Him and others, and propelling us towards our created potential.” - Nathan Shattuck Next time: The True Self 3
