Tonight we pick up with Jesus before the council ( at night i might add).

Illegal!!

So lets begin here Mark 14:53

So from the garden of Gethsemane they led Jesus back into the city to the temple region, it is close by the temple that we find the house of the high priest and here we see that many of the elders and scribes came together.

Now they did not have to have the whole Assembly present to put forth a trial, only the leading members had to be there right then, remember they are doing this at night and it was against their own law to do such things under the cover of darknesss

Moving on verse 54

So Peter followed as Jesus was led out of the garden and taken to the court yard of the High Priest, and he was sitting with the guards staying warm by the fire but also to hear and see what was going on this evening...

Now verses 55-58

Verse 55 really sums up what is happening here, they were seeking testimony that would support them in their effort to put Jesus to death, so they worked to bring a charge against Jesus.

Many people brought charges against Jesus, they are saying this or that, all false and at times verse 56 says their testimony did not agree.

Verse 57-58, people stood and made their accusations, false testimony and some even repeated what Jesus said concerning the temple.

Truly anything and everything was being said in hopes of it uniting the group against Jesus.

What do you think about the way they went about this, trying to bring false accusations ?

They told so many lies they couldnt even decide themselves what was to be considered truth… just a big bunch of liars.

Verse 60-61

At this point in the early morning hours the high priest stood up and asked Jesus to answer the charges against him.

But Jesus had nothing to say to him about the charges....

And at that the High Priest asked Jesus plainly, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the blessed?”

Let me ask you a question here, do you think it really matter to the High Priest if Jesus was the Son of God or not at this point?

Verses 62-64

So Jesus answered his question plainly, Jesus said “ I Am” He identifies himself with the God of the OT, whom they claimed to be obedient too.

Jesus also shares with them a OT word that speaks to a future time from David perspective but might have helped them see that He was just who he said he was..

So Jesus spoke from Psalm 11O, verse 1

And how did they receive the words of Jesus?

Not well at all… He (HIgh Priest) rejected the words of Jesus and tore this clothes, literally he rent them as a sign of mourning..

The High Priest literally rejected that Jesus was the messiah, the Son of God and accused him of blasphemy.... a crime they said deserved death.

And truthfully and he rejected the words of Jesus.

Remember it is still night, they have assembled under the cover of darkness revealing the true nature of their heart.

Verse 65

They show their displeasure for Jesus, they gave him tie the guards who were even worse, they covered the face of Jesus, striking him and asking him to prophecy telling them who it was that hit him.

Such horrible mistreatment of our Savior.

When you look at the biblical account of Jesus with these sinful people it seems as if the treatment of him by their hands grows.

First they hit, then they will whip and beat, and finally we know the crucifixion.

Now in this last section we come to the section of Peter’s denial of Jesus.

This is one of the saddest of passages of the Scriptures concerning the disciples outside of Judas betrayal of Jesus.

So lets examine what is happening , remember Jesus told him before the rooster crows, Peter would have denied him 3 times.

Denial 1.

The first one is seen in verses 66-68

See Peter here, he is in the courtyard of the high priest where all this is talking place.

and a Servant girl noticed Peter.

What do you think may have given him away?

Is speech, his mannerisms....

He was from Galilee ......

Many people have seen Jesus and the disciples over the last 3 1/2 years, so they of course have probably seen Peter.

But Peter denies it and walks out of the courtyard hoping no one else has heard her accusation.

.. and suddenly he hears the rooster crow.

Denials 2 & 3 .

The second one is in verses 69-71

Now Peter is hoping to not be noticed but she is relentless, she began to tell others, he is one of them.

He is one who has been with Jesus all the time.

But verse 70, Peter denies it again, this time in a much harsher tone.

Then a bystander, a stranger in the crowd said, he is a Galilean, certainly you are one of them.

You know when someone from why up north comes here, we recognize they are not from around here by their accent, perhaps the way they act, talk or even eat...

I remember years ago a young family from Washington state moved into KY, and the mother was amazed at what we eat, biscuits and gravy, wilted lettuce and onions....

She thought we were killing ourselves....

She let us know she was not from around here.

So Peter at the bystanders accusation you are a Galilean, Peter swore, cursed the man… I do not know the one who speak off....

and finally Verse 72

Can you imagine how Peter felt as the rooster crowded and he realized what he had done.

The one who pledged to stand with Jesus to the death as now denied him 3 times… Peter is heartbroken and he weeps at the state of his life in that moment

I cannot imagine the stress and strain Jesus was under during this evening.

It is a horrible experience.

And now Peter is beside himself, heartbroken for he must feel like he has not only let himself down, but he has let the Savior down as well.

Here is a question,

Would we have done any better.....

I really doubt it.
