Once again we find James basing his advice on the teaching of Jesus you may recall these words from Matthew’s account of the Sermon on the Mount
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
A side note: James is not only giving information to help us live victoriously he is also teaching us how to read and apply scripture as he builds lesson after lesson upon the words of Jesus and/or the words of the law or prophets. Moving on then James clarifies that second threat.

Our default conception of “temptation” as some external, unseen force that we cannot overcome does not mirror scripture. So
