Overview
This Course- In this course we will explore angels, demons, and the fight we are caught in between them.
Here are some of the Goals we hope to achieve
Attain a better understanding of the spiritual realm
Understand the nature and operations of the angelic and demonic in our lives
Learn how to discern the spirits we are faced with daily
Discover tactics and strategies to resist the assaults of the enemy
In order to achieve these goals there will be some expectations from you.
There will be some practical applications which will be necessary to progress in this fight
we renew our discourse concerning the Devil, which we started two days ago, which we also addressed to the initiated, this morning when we discoursed to them about renunciation, and covenant.
And we do this, not because our discourse about the Devil is sweet to us, but because the doctrine about him is full of security for you.
For he is an enemy and a foe, and it is a great security to know clearly, the tactics of your enemies.
+John Chrysostom Three Homilies concerning the Power of Demons
Basics of Angelology/Demonology, and Spiritual Warfare
What is Angelology/Demonology, and Spiritual Warfare
Angelology/Demonology is, as the names imply, the study of angels and demons.
You must be extremely careful on these topics as there is a great amount of occult obsession with angels and demons which have flooded into the market.
As a result many people have unknowingly taken them to be legitimate sources for understanding
Spiritual Warfare is a term used to encompass the various forms in which we fight against the temptations and operations of the demonic against us
Dangers in approaching these studies
There are a number of concerns to be considered when it comes to studying angels and demons
If there is a notion of obsession over angels and demons you should not study these things, you should talk to your priest and find where this obsession is coming from
As stated above, sources and materials must be scrutinized!
You should consult a priest, or someone knowledgeable, before diving into a questionable text
What is the benefit in studying it
With these dangers many ask what is the benefit then?
The benefit is getting a backdrop for the struggle we are faced with.
The fathers have used many analogies to explain the struggle between angels and demons and many of those have been misunderstood in our time due to a lack of context.
I will go over the most popular in the lesson on demons
Studying will also give us greater insight to our reactions and the reactions of those around us, we will be able to recognize when we are falling into even the more subtle temptations of sinful action
The greatest benefit however is learning the tools at our disposal to resist the enemy and to be effective in our struggle against sin.
This is done through self examination and relying on the instruments of Grace God has given to us
Basic Foundations
Sin and Authority- The root issue for Man is the loss of our God ordained authority over creation by union with Him
God made man and granted him Authority over creation with the command to subjugate the earth
When man fell Satan stole this authority and subjected man to Death reigning, unjustly, over him
Christ’s incarnation restored this union and authority.
Through the price of his unlawful death, having had no sin in himself, He destroyed the subjugation to death
We share in this authority with Christ, but our sins distance us from Christ and sharing in that authority
The Demons and Death are powerless in themselves, but when we sin we unlock doors that they are able to exploit to cause trouble.
They NEVER gain power or authority over us, they are defeated and God has won.
However they can operate from a place of strength when we are in a place of sin.
Looking at the real world, when a kingdom conquers another the victory is decided and irreversible.
However the defeated forces may still stir trouble before there is actual peace.
Sin is always the issue against man, it separates us from God, exposes us to the demonic, and divides us from one another.
We must always be vigilant in resisting sin and going to Confession.
When dealing with spiritual warfare we have number of aids at our disposal, we must make use of all the instruments God has given us
Sacramentals- All of these sacramentals are holy and able to drive away evil.
A very basic concept here is to drive out darkness with light, each of these is a light to aid us in removing darkness
Sacraments- the sacraments are given for the forgiveness of sin, as such they are a great aid in our warfare and is a reason they hold such a high place in the Church.
We must take great effort to confess, commune, and receive the blessings of the church as much as possible
Holy Water- the Church gives us holy water for use at home, this water can be used in many ways.
A Roman Catholic tradition is to make the sign of the cross with fingers dipped in Holy Water as a “rewashing”.
Holy Oil- the Church also gives us Holy Oil used in the several of our services.
This oil is another instrument of God's Grace given to us for the forgiveness of our sins.
Relics- Relics are open to the Church at all times, we are able to beseech the aid of the individual as well as come in touch with the Holy Spirit which surrounds the relic.
Prayer- Prayer is our most basic instrument in warfare
The Jesus Prayer- this prayer is a very effective prayer in our warfare, the name of Jesus itself is a powerful weapon, on top of this is a confession of our sinfulness reconciling that issue of sin.
Angels serve as God's ministers, they fight on our behalf as well as try to guide us away from sin and toward God.
we can always call on the help of our Guardian angel and the rest of the heavenly host to come to our aid in the struggle
At the end of this course we will also learn about Self Examination.
This is a key tool the fathers of the church have discovered to aid us in finding our weaknesses and discerning between the spirits.
We will cover exactly how to proceed in this examination and what exactly to look for.
