Psalm 51:
How may of you like to live under stress?
I am sure no one likes it.
I was reading about a study that shows that people who experience a lot of stress increase their risk of dying by 43%, but here is the strange part, it only does if they believe that stress is harmful for their health.
In other words, people who live under a lot of stress may not increase their chances of dying as long as they don’t believe that it is harmful for them.
Funny right?
I am sure if I asked today if you have experienced stress lately most of us would raise our hand.
We all have been there.
And when we are under stress our heart rate goes up, we begin to swat a little, and our blood pressure rise up.
We don’t like stress.
Here are some possible causes for stress:
Family issues
Responsibilities (leadership)
Violence around
Injustice
School
Wickedness of others
Disobedience to God
David was, according to scripture, a man after God’s own heart.
At a very early age he was anointed to be king.
His own father didn’t even think about him when Samuel the prophet came looking for a prospect to be anointed king.
After he was anointed he had to wait for years for his time to be crowned king even though he was already anointed.
Don’t we need patience sometimes to wait upon God’s perfect time?
David was, according to scripture, a man after God’s own heart.

We learn from that story, that God doesn’t look at the outward appearance, he looks at the heart.
Nothing impresses God more than your heart.
He is well aware of the condition of your heart.
This week was very convicting for me as I was preparing for today.
I realized once again, that my performance doesn’t impress God, that what I have or can accomplish doesn’t impress God, that God is completely aware of the true condition of my heart.
No wonder we are told in proverbs to guard our hearts above all things.
See, before I would read that proverb and would think.
“Well, I need to protect my heart from being unforgiving, or getting bitter.”
But I think that more than that, or besides that, protecting my heart means opening my heart to God continually.
He wants our all!
The heart in the Bible means your all, your whole personality, not just your emotions like we like to use it today.
It is your activities, how you think, what you think, and what you do with what you think.
And so David is according to scripture, a man after God’s own heart.
But in , he had just been confronted by the prophet about his sin.
Not just any sin.
David was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
David was tempted and acted in disobedience.
David covered up his disobedience.
His heart was under stress when his sin was uncovered.
The right place is in your heart
The right heart goes to the right places
A surrendered heart follows the right steps with joy
God has the right heart.
Jesus went through the worst place to save you and me.
He did it with joy.
And yes, he was under a lot of stress...
