Scripture stresses the importance and also the possibility of a true experience of the living God. This is contrasted with the more academic knowledge about him. Experiential knowledge of God comes through personal encounter, through the witness of the Holy Spirit, through reflection on his past goodness and through the shared experiences of others.

Examples of personal encounter with God

Deuteronomy 11:2–7 NKJV
Know today that I do not speak with your children, who have not known and who have not seen the chastening of the Lord your God, His greatness and His mighty hand and His outstretched arm—His signs and His acts which He did in the midst of Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to all his land; what He did to the army of Egypt, to their horses and their chariots: how He made the waters of the Red Sea overflow them as they pursued you, and how the Lord has destroyed them to this day; what He did for you in the wilderness until you came to this place; and what He did to Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben: how the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, their households, their tents, and all the substance that was in their possession, in the midst of all Israel—but your eyes have seen every great act of the Lord which He did.

Sharing experience of God

Speaking to future generations

Deuteronomy 4:9–10 NKJV
Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren, especially concerning the day you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, when the Lord said to me, ‘Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.’

Speaking from personal experience: OT

Deuteronomy 7:18–19 NKJV
you shall not be afraid of them, but you shall remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt: the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs and the wonders, the mighty hand and the outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. So shall the Lord your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid.

The exiles’ confidence is based upon God’s deliverance in the past:

;
Jeremiah 16:14–15 NKJV
“Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “that it shall no more be said, ‘The Lord lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,’ but, ‘The Lord lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where He had driven them.’ For I will bring them back into their land which I gave to their fathers.

Speaking from personal experience: NT

John 3:11 NKJV
Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.
See also ; ;
John 9:25 NKJV
He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

Confidence based on past experience

The disciples’ experience of Jesus Christ’s provision should have taught them not to worry about food;
The New Park Street Pulpit Sermons, Vol. VI Jesus about His Father’s Business (No. 302)

But, now, having seen Christ, we have seen the Father also, and from henceforth, we both know the Father, and have seen him, since we know the love of Christ, and have felt it shed abroad in our hearts.
