We can learn a lot concerning how God chooses or calls people into ministry, If we study Jesus as the greatest role model.
We see that all the men he selected had jobs and he approached them while they where working, We also see his call for them to leave what they get paid doing, to follow him with no promise of wordly wealth but a guarantee that they will make a difference in other peoples lives.
But also what is not said but proven is, When God calls you he also provides a Leader to train you, And your trained before you serve.. shows how God frowns on unprepared servants.

When you arrive there, anoint Hazael to be king of Aram.
16 Then anoint Jehu grandson of Nimshi* to be king of Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from the town of Abel-meholah to replace you as my prophet.
17 Anyone who escapes from Hazael will be killed by Jehu, and those who escape Jehu will be killed by Elisha! 18 Yet I will preserve 7,000 others in Israel who have never bowed down to Baal or kissed him!”

Elisha was called by God, but found by a man of God..
He was able to find him working the field with 12 teams
12 represents Governmental Order, It also represents the 12 tribes of Isreal
He found him with 12 but he was last, and last shall be first..... this showed his humility to be a leader but willing to following..
Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak across his shoulders and then walked away
19th verse Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon Him..
This was an investiture ( he vested him as a prophet) in the Office of a Prophet.
In the East the priest would throw their mantle across a mantee shoulders,
Elisha had probably been educated in the school of prophets and was aware of what just happen..
Elisha wanted to kiss and say goodby before following the man of God
