Intro
We are coming from a passage that reminds us of this great hope we have in Christ, and that we are not in our homeland.
We belong to God’s kingdom at the end of the day and at the end of our life.
So because of this great salvation, Peter tells us that we need to be ready for the things ahead while being an exile.
To Live Holy Lives We Must Know Where We Are and Whose We Are.
So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control.
Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.
14 So you must live as God’s obedient children.
Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires.
You didn’t know any better then.
15 But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.
16 For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
Explanation:
Since they are in exile they can expect:
people not to understand them
unfair treatment sometimes
feeling out of place
frustrated, stressed, confused
“prepare your mind for action”
gird of the loins of your mind - wearing a holding up your robe.
be sober-minded / self control
because as a believer in exile you are alway at war with your flesh, the world, and satan.
flesh- part of you that goes back to sin, what your controlled by if your not a follower of Jesus.
the world- the sinfulness in the world that draws you in to rebel from God.
satan- the ruler of this sinful world who wants to destroy your faith and life and lead you to death.
Used later to warn to be aware of satan who is like a lion
Lion out at falls creek.
We must also remember who we belong to.
verse 14 tells us we are children of God
saved by Him
We should not run back to the old ways of life we once did, we are his new children who seek to obey him.
Lastly we are to be holy!
We are ambassadors of God, so we are to be like him in Holiness.
What is Holiness
separateness- God is unlike anything else, and is separate from us.
exodus 15: 11 “Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods?
Who is like you, majestic in holiness...
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
11 “Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods?
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
God is in a category all his own
Who is like you, majestic in holiness...
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
God’s Holiness is also separation from anything impure.
More spiritual than anything
Uzzah dies cause he caught the ark of the covenant from hitting the ground
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton: Standard Bible Society, 2016), .
Uzzah was sinful in someway, the ground was not.
We don’t like holiness
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton: Standard Bible Society, 2016), .
sterile
bland
pompous
But its where we get out word wholeness, which is something we want.
we want wholeness brought to our lives in justice, peace, love, mercy.
When we see serious brokenness we want to see wholeness there
That’s what God is, whole love, justice, peace, and grace.
And God calls us to be separate like He is, but how.
Application:
3 ways to live as exiles
immigrants - most students
YOLO mentality
Application:
want to make this place their home
use their resources for enjoyment in this place
worried only about whats going on here and now
you don’t really think much about where you have come from.
these are believers who want to just blend in and do what everyone else does.
tourists - usually adults
only here for a short time so you do your own thing
speak your language, eat your type of food, only are with your group
only worried about what your doing.
these are believers who are just hanging out waiting for the world to end
Exiles/Ambassadors
you know you don’t call the place home, but you know your there for a little while so you get to know the place.
Ambassador is sent from home country to another for a period of time with a mission and purpose in one place but from another place.
this is what we are called to do
We are to be aware of whats going on
don’t drift through life and your Christianity just blending in
don’t ignore whats going on around you
see that you are God’s child and be his ambassador and obey his mission of being holy
The next passage will show us how.
To Live Holy Lives We Must Have Jesus’ Holiness
17 And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites.
He will judge or reward you according to what you do.
So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.”
18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors.
And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.
19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
20 God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.
21 Through Christ you have come to trust in God.
