I first want to say how humble I am being able to stand in front of you and being able to share the word of God with you. I also want to thank Pastor Mike for giving me this opportunity. This sermon might be a little different than you are used to, but I promise I will speak from my heart.
In my lifetime I have gone through some highs and lows .
(explain)
I am sure this is no different than most of you. For me, I have always seemed to hear a Christian Song that would make me reflect about what I might be dealing with. I remember the first Christian Son I listened to, “I Can Only Imagine”. It would talk about what it would feel like to walk with Jesus.
I can only imagine what it will be like
When I walk, by your side
I can only imagine what my eyes will see
When your face is before me
I can only Imagine
I can only Imagine
These are very powerful words that when you close your eyes, you only can Imagine what that walk will be like. , Jesus spoke to the people once more and said,
John 8:12 NLT
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
I would continually ask my wife to show me Bible Scripture that would relate to the songs during our many nights of riding through the countryside. I always would drive her crazy with that. I remember when coming home from Allentown after a Chemo Treatment and I’m sure she wasn’t feeling good, I would start asking and then I would notice that look and followed up with shut up and please listen to the song. I did get a little smile.
When my life changed 3 years ago I needed to start digging deeper myself and find out if the songs were actually true worship songs or just feel good songs. I started to to on the internet and look into the artists and find out if there was scripture they would reference the songs to, and then I would reference that to the Bible and try and understand the true meaning. I do believe that just about everyone that listens to Christian Music can find a song that will bring you to your knees and effect you emotionally.
Casting Crowns lead singer and writer Mark Hall would always include the Scripture reference he used in writing his music. To me, this made the songs so much more personal, understanding, and Biblical. The first time my wife sat at this piano in this church to play for Bobby, “If We’ve Ever Needed You” I can still hear Bob...
Hear our cry, Lord we pray,
Our faces down, our hands are raised,
You called us out, we turned away, We’ve turned away
With Ship-wrecked faith, idols rise
We do what is right, in our own eyes,
Our children now, will pay the price
We need your light, Lord shine Your Light,
If we’ve ever needed you, Lord, it’s now Lord, it’s now
We are desparate for Your hand, We’re reachin’ out, we’re reachin out.
The Bible verse which this song was based on is .
Proverbs 3:5–6 NIV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
This was the verse we used at my wife’s funeral remembrance video, as I know she would always trust our Lord. As a good Christian you smile at people and say everything is OK. But there is time of doubt and struggle.
So you see, I have those special songs that effect me personally, that I have used in those times of doubt and struggle.
So you see, I have those special songs that effect me personally and today I want to break down another one that touches me in a special way tied to Scriptures.
Today I want to break down one that touches me in a special way tied to Scriptures, and hope that you will see how you can do this with songs that touch you.
A Worship leader i admire once said,
“I believe God created music to connect people to Heaven.”
- Joel Houston, Hillsong United
Joel went on to say, ‘no church, pastor, christian or worship song will save you, only Jesus can do that.’
I ask you to bow your heads so we can pray.
Dear heavenly father, please give me the strength and courage to place all the glory on you, if there is anyone not sure of what you gave us by letting your son die for us, please open their hearts to focus on you. In Jesus name, Amen.
Acts 4:10–12 NIV
then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is “ ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12 NIV
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
What I see as the explanation for these verses are many people were reacting negatively at the time to the fact that there is no other name than that of Jesus to call on for Salvation. This wasn’t something the church decided, it was the specific teaching of Jesus Himself. This is where they definitely had a problem. But as in
In it says,
John 14:6 NIV
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
So if God designated Jesus to be the savior of the world, no one else can be equal.
I believe today some Christians are open-minded on some issues but not on how we are saved from sin.
Our focus must be on Jesus, whom God offered as the way to have an eternal relationship with himself.
There is no other name.

No other name.

The song, No Other Name, was written with as its basis. So, let’s breakdown some of this song and really get the true meaning of what Joel Houston and Jonas Myrin of Hillsong United were thinking.

No other name for Salvation

Salvation in the Hebrew language (Yasa) means to save, help in distress, rescue, deliver, set free. Broadly speaking one might say that Salvation is the overwhelming theme of the entire Bible. The biblical writers speak of salvation as a reality with at once spiritual and physical, individual and communal dimensions. Since the biblical writers view salvation as a historical reality, the temporal dimensions of the past, present the future further intensify and deepen the concept.
Salvation is a process with a beginning and an end.
Without having salvation in your life, what do you have? To me, before becoming saved, I would feel lost, lonely, no one to turn to.
But, after accepting Jesus into my heart and understanding he died for My Sins, MY SINS, he gave me new life!
Him saving us makes Him the Greatest One of all.

That is why in the first part of the song, I love where Joel and Jonas wrote:
One name
Holds weight above them all
His fame
Outlasts the earth He formed
His praise
Resounds beyond the stars
And echoes in our hearts
The Greatest One of all
When I looked for bible verses related to this theme of Him being the Savior and the Greatest One of all I found the following verses.
Isaiah 37:20 NIV
Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Lord, are the only God.”
Psalm 83:18 NIV
Let them know that you, whose name is the Lord that you alone are the Most High over all the earth.
Isaiah 45:22 NIV
“Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

No other name, the Greatest of All!

I believe what they were saying in at the time is this:
Salvation is for all, not just the Israelites. Many times you would think Israel had the inside track on salvation. But, God makes it clear that his people include all of those who follow Him.
Israel was the means through which the world would come to know God. Jesus fulfilled Israel’s role and gave people the opportunity to follow God.
Also, Christ came into the world of men as the holiest man ever born. Except for Adam and Jesus Christ, every man was born with evil. Christ was born sinless. He was distinct from other men in that He was without practiced sin. No man could convince or convict this man among men of sin.
He is the GREATEST of ALL!
The second stanza of the song reads:
His face
Shines brighter than the sun
His grace
As boundless as His Love
He reigns
With healing in His wings
The King above all Kings
The Greatest One of all
As I looked for verses about His reign, I found:
2 Peter 1:11 NIV
and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
2 Samuel 7:13 NIV
He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
Revelation 11:15 NIV
The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever.”

No other name, He will reign

All three verses talk about how Christ will reign forever in the Kingdom made for us by Jesus’ Grace.
In the New Testament, John describes Jesus this way:
John 1:16
John 1:16 NIV
Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
In one of the most important statements about Grace according to the scriptures, John states:
John 1:17 NIV
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No other name, where we find Grace

This is seen in when Jesus came into the temple. The Jewish Leaders had disregarded the law by arresting the woman without the man in adultery. Of course, this was a trap so they could trick Jesus. See, they figured if he let them stone her they would report this to the Romans as Jews were not allowed to execute on their own. I believe what happened next totally shocked them.
So the Pharisees brought this woman before Him who was caught in adultery, and they said to Jesus “according to the Law of Moses we need to stone her to death.”
Jesus responded by kneeling down to the ground and with his finger he drew in the dirt. The Pharisees questioned him and as he stood he responded to them, “Let anyone of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” He then went back down and continued to draw in the dirt with his finger.
Little by little they all left and it ended up just the woman and Jesus still there. He said to her, “Then neither do I condemn you. Go now, and leave your life of sin.”
Pause
Jesus stands ready to forgive any sin in our lives, but confession and repentance means a change in our heart. With God’s help we can accept Christ’s forgiveness by stopping the wrong doing.
So to my understanding, the word of Grace is God’s choosing to bless us rather than curse us because of our sin.
There is no other name, because Jesus alone can give us this GRACE.
Further on in the song, they write:

Find Hope
When all the world seems lost
Behold
The triumph of the cross
His power
Has trampled death and grave
Our life found in His name
The greatest Name of all
There is one thing that Jesus did command us all to do that we can all understand and relate to. This one thing He said would be the way the world would know that we are His disciples: The love we show to one another.

No other name, in which we live

Jesus gave us several examples of His love, in which we are to live. If you would like to write these bible verses down and read them at home, oops, I guess I just gave you homework.
Jesus healed the sick in love -
Jesus raised the dead in love - ,
Jesus fed the hungry in love -
Jesus preached the kingdom in love -
Jesus interceded for his disciples and the church in love -
I sometimes wonder, “Why is there so much spiritual blindness today?”
People have not taken the time to behold the truth.
To behold a Christian should be to look to God, to Jesus and the Holy Spirit to see, observe and comprehend his will and ways through his word, the Bible.
This shows the responsibility that is ours in a Christian walk.
We must live in Jesus’ name to show Him to the world.
No other name, in which to live.
Joel and Jonas wrote in a powerful stanza:
The earth will shake
And tremble before Him
Chains will break
As heaven and earth sin
Holy is the name
Holy is the name of
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
When I read an article, I though this quote was interesting:
“No one misunderstand that to believe in Jesus is not a word, his name isn’t just a word there is a lot more. I feel full of hope because Christians have the moment God gave us when Jesus was ignored by his people, and he looked at us by his Grace.”
“He gave us a chance to become guards of God’s word in all aspects of our life. We are also the light and guidance as examples to others if we praise his name forever.”
Finally, Joel and Jonas wrote:
Seated on high, the undefeated One
Mountains bow down as we lift Him up
There is no other name
There is no other name
There is no other name
Jesus

No other name, Jesus!

Two observations from how strong His name is:
The Father set his seal of approval upon the Son’s self sacrifice by exalting him and conferring upon him the superlative name that is above every name. Even with men and women despising him and ultimately leading him to the cross, he was rejected by earthly creatures but was raised and exalted by the Creator.
We should be eager, trusting and obeying Christ in all things. He is worthy of our truth. He has the wisdom to tell us how to live. And as the Head of our church, he is regarded as the head and gave us the instruction manual through the disciples. But it is up to us to carry them out. For God also has exalted Him and gave Him the name which is above every name.
Jesus is Lord!
Life will be full of struggles, but they do lead to one place—heaven.
All you have to do is remember that Jesus knows that these things are happening. Nothing is a surprise to God. He knew that all of these things were going to happen.
Jesus is able to help. You need to take the first step by accepting Him in your life. And, if you have done this, then you need to trust him and live like him realizing you might fail, but He will be there to pick you back up.
For me, He is my Rock, my Foundation, my Guardian, yes He is my whole life!
I can stand before you and tell you, “I love Jesus!” Even with the trials I have gone through and will go through, I cannot think of life without Him!
Can you?!
As we stand and bow our heads, and as the worship team comes forward, if there is anyone here today without know if you have a relationship with Jesus, I ask you to just take a moment and say this prayer with me.
Lord Jesus, I ask you to forgive my sins and save me from eternal separation from God. By faith, I accept your work and death on the cross as sufficient payment for my sins. Thank you for providing the way for me to know you and to have a relationship with my heavenly Father. Please give me the strength, wisdom and determination to walk in the center of your will. In Jesus name, Amen!
With head still bowed, if you have done this please see me after the service and we can help you talk to someone and help you continue on the right path in your walk with the Lord. And as we sing to the Lord, and you feel the urge to raise your arms, do not be ashamed as this is a sign of total surrender.
Dear heavenly Father, I can only say, ‘Thank you,’ for everything you have done for our Church and me personally in my life. In your Son’s name, Amen.
Let’s all sing along to “No Other Name.”
