Precepts
(Slide) A precept (n) 1.
A general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought .
2. A writ or warrant)
We all have rules, or a moral code (precept) that we live by.
Some are good, maybe some we are diligently asking God to remove for they are not so good.
The bible is full of precepts they are called
(Slide) doctrine, command, decree or even commandment.
(Slide) Another way to look at a precept is a timeless truth in the form of a simple illustration
Proverb 24 in most translations have a header of “Precepts and Warnings” today we will look, in a survey at the precepts, next week at the warnings
I. Precept - Wisdom to build on
Now remember the simple definition of precept “a timeless truth in the form of a simple illustration.”
So is the writer saying wisdom is needed to build a house, or is there a spiritual truth to it?
- YES
Can’t build a house without a plan, have to have wisdom to have the plan, then wisdom to put the plan into action.
But then we are talking about a spiritual house.
Now, in looking at these verses let’s talk about the house, the house we build spiritually and the house we build spiritually for our family which is much more important than the physical house.
(Slide) This house is built on wisdom - already mentioned that it takes wisdom to build a physical house, and it takes wisdom to build the spiritual house to, we are to build our house with the wisdom that God gives freely, abundantly (think of Jam1:5)
(Slide) It is gracefully designed (full of grace) (think of Rom5:17)
(Slide) Solidly erected (established) - think of Psm40:2
(Slide) Beautiful furnished - with precious things like, grace, mercy, forgiveness, compassion all wrapped up in love.
This house is ready for the spiritual war that has to be fought (vv.5-6)
The precept of our spiritual house being built on wisdom and understanding that is firmly established so that we can face the the spiritual wars that was to destroy us.
God has given us His precepts to help us
Wisdom prevails over strength, knowledge over brute force.
You cannot fight a spiritual battle in your spiritual house with brute force.
It is not by our own personal strength, but the the collective strength of the body of Christ we overcome (i.e. the multitude of counselors)- the counselors we have are the 40 writers that are God inspired that we as the body stand in unison on.
II.
Precept - Wisdom is soul saving
As honey is sweet on your lips and nutritious for your body, so is wisdom for your soul.
As we are waiting for the appearing of our blessed hope
let us not only took but patiently await with great desire.
So, what to do as we wait?
Pro 24:11
(Slide) Be concerned about the souls of man.
Do what you can do to help save the souls of man.
(Slide) These verses are a precept but they are also a warning.
(Slide) We cannot be negligent in carrying the message to save souls - (v.12) - negligent or ignorant we do not want, our precept has to be to save the souls of man
(Slide) lost are being lead off to death - we are to hold them back - (v.11)
The Lord weighs our hearts, are they found lacking?
Are we carrying out the Great commission?
One article I recently read says:
(Slide) “About 90% of all the people won to Christ are won by 5% of the professing Christians.
If everyone sought to win souls the way you do, would you be saved today?
“ -Charles Woods
Ouch- that hurts not easy to swallow that is it?
So the solution to this is
Sanctify Christ as Lord
Be prepared
Be gentle and show reverence (respect)
Precept - Wisdom is God fearing
Fear of the Lord should be a great comfort and assurance to the believer.
It should also be a challenge and a prayer for the king, in our case our government.
We are to stay the Christian course even when evildoers seem to be prevailing.
It is wise to know the truth, there is no future for the evil man except to be cast out into the lake of fire.
Rev20:
We don’t want this for us, we don’t want this for others, again the precept of soul winning should come to mind.
As the righteous, as the light of the world your light should shine bright the light of Jesus in you, even in the midst of hard times.
Pro24:
The long of the short
The principle, the precept, is this, rebellion leads to calamity and ruin, to the God fearing person we can can these precepts and apply them into our lives.
Don’t give into the winds of change, the Bible has proven itself and does not need to be altered, added, or taken away from.
It has everything in it we need to take us to glory.
Whereas God may use the king (government) to help us, we need to know God’s truth and stand for God’s truth even when it is not popular.
For the calamity, the ruin of governments (kings) comes at the hand of the Lord and it will happen, but to us may we know, remember and apply.
Pro 24:2
