Intro

Paul is trying to encourage them to be united
- The Basis of unity
-The Call for unity
-The Hindrances to unity
-The Essentials for unity - humility and looking out for the interests of others instead of ourselves.
In other words, be like Jesus, do what He did:
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus / Have the same mindset or attitude as that of Christ.
Have the same mindset or attitude as that of Christ.
What was that mindset or attitude?

The Deity of Christ

Philippians 2:6 ESV
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

This is one of the NT verses that emphatically and explicitly declare the deity of Christ.

Know who Jesus is- not merely a good man, a great teacher, a prophet. He is Lord and God!

The Humiliation of Christ

Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

a) Did not hold on to deity.

refers to Jesus pouring Himself out. In light of v. 6 and 8, this seems to imply that Jesus laid aside His rights as God in order to become the world’s servant.

humility: The quality of being humble or having a lowly opinion of oneself; meekness, lowliness: the opposite of pride or haughtiness.
He did not consider deity something to hold on to, forcibly keep, a right to retain, a privilege to enjoy, show off.

The Exaltation of Christ

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
a) God has highly exalted Him.
When we gather to worship, we worship Jesus who is highly exalted.
b) His name is above every other name.
No other Name but the Name of Jesus!
There is power in the Name of Jesus.

And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
c) Every knee will bow before Him and every tongue confess
All the atheists, the agnostics, Hindus, Muslims, Bahais, Buddhists.
All the world leaders, the elite, the educated, Hollywood actors/actresses, media.
God’s desire is for man to bow and worship His Son, Jesus Christ.
