Introduction
Tell a bit of what we have been dealing with thus far in the gospel account from Mark.
Jesus in the upper room
New covenant
Revelation of a betrayer
So lets begin with Jesus looking at verses 32-35
Mark
So they left the upper room and began to travel to the place called Gethsemane, the olive press.
It was a garden, more literally a grove of olive trees with a press in the center of the grove.
They left the city and tells us that crossed the Kedron valley, with was a small stream that was often dry this time of year.
But crossing it they come up and find the place where Jesus often prayed.
Now looking at a little detail, we know Judas has already left to betray Jesus.
So 11 travel with him to the garden.
8 of the disciples he leaves just inside the gates of the garden and Jesus instructs them to stay there and pray.
And why not, this is why they have come…so pray.
Now verse 33 says that he takes Peter, James and John a little farther in the garden.
Jesus is very burdened, his heart is troubled.
and with verse 34, Jesus told them his soul was very sorrowful, even to death, remain here and watch.
Interesting here is the Greek word for troubled.
It means to be in terrified amazement.
Was Jesus sacred to face the possibility of death and to carry the burden of sin, the punishment for the worlds sin upon himself?
No I do not think the dear of death, especially that at the hands of men bothered him.
I do not think he was scared or anything of the such.
He was sorrowful because the full force of the Father’s fury against sin would be the cup he would have to drink.
I think it is difficult for us to express in human terms just how terrible it would be to bear human sin.
And Jesus asks these three to remain there, watch and pray.
What does that mean.. watch and pray?
speaks to the idea of staying on the alert, watching is to keep guard lest anything come upon you without notice.
Pray.. speaks to seeking divine help, communication with God.
This thought we have in verse 34 my soul is very sorrowful speak to
And then verse 35
Jesus removed himself from everyone and prayed...
says
Now this phrase “if it were possible, the hour might mass from him..” Possible… is a word that confuses us, what was Jesus really asking for?
Was he asking God to stop and not do this, was he asking for something different?
John MacArthur says Jesus was not asking God if he has the power to let the cup pass from Him but if it were possible in God’s plan.
Soon he would be the sacrifice for sin, and the hour was approaching quickly.
What do you think about the whole “if…possible”??????
Now lets move on....
Mark 14:36=
Verse 36 continues this thought… Abba is an enduring, intimate phrase, combine with Father and this is where people speak to the term of the father as Daddy.
This cup was the cup of divine wrath referred to in the OT
Isa
Jesus knew the sope of God’s power, was there an alternative path to provide salvation to the world.
But if not… your will be done.
I will not try to escape your plans.
Verse 37-38 Jesus find the disciples sleeping...
The one hour might refer to the amount of time Jesus had been praying a stones distance from them.. could they not do the same with Him.
Calling Simon and not using the term Peter might be that he was not living up to his name… the rock or stone....
Watch and pray… they were to keep on alert.
John MacArthur says....They were to discern when were under spiritual attack, they were not to let their self confidence lull them to sleep.
The Spirit is strong but the flesh is week.
No matter how willing our soul might be willing, we are connected to our flesh and at times weakness sets in… they were tired, sleepy and it is hard to overcome those obstacles.
Verses 39-40 the scene repeats itself
Now lets move on to the last section
Mark 14_
Are you still sleeping, well the hour has come, the time for sleep is over, the son of man is betrayed into the hands of men..
Judas has returned with others to arrest Jesus.
Jesus is telling them the time is coming...
Mark 14:
Now lets look at the next two verses
Judas comes with those soldiers, guards and others with swords and clubs.
And he betrays Jesus with a kiss.
This was the sign that Judas had told them he would use to betray them.
So now verses 46-47
They took hold of Jesus, and one of the disciples draws a sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
Verses 48-49
Mark 14:4
Jesus speaks to them in the way befitting.
They came to the one they have seen day after day.
teaching in the temples, healing and doing many wondrous works.
speaks to one of the passages Jesus spoke.
to 53 is another that speaks ot the same.
Psalm
Verses 50-52
mark
And the prophecy from Zechariah is fulfilled, they disciple fled, they were scared and didnt understand what was going on..
And a young man in a linen garment is taken hold of, but he flees out of this clothes and runs off in the night… John Mark.
Time for us to stop here
