I. The Bible is about God (1:1a)
The Bible is a book about God - It both begins and ends with God
is one of the most God-centered chapters in the Bible (32 times in 31 verses)
is the foundation for the entire Bible - if you can believe this verse, you can believe the entire Bible
Atheism says there is no god, many religions say there are many gods, pantheism says everything is god
In the beginning, God - God exists: No atheism
In the beginning God - One, not many: no polytheism
In the beginning God created - A part from creation, not a part of creation: No pantheism
If you can discredit , you can discredit the entire Bible
The Bible is not a disjointed set of stories and rules; it is one story - all about Jesus
II.
The Bible tells us God created everything (1:1)
This is not a question of whether or not it is true, the Bible gives no defense or evidence, God simply says: “This is how it happened”
In the beginning, God - God exists: No atheism
In the beginning God - One, not many: no polytheism
In the beginning God created - A part from creation, not a part of creation: No pantheism
Only a belief in God can make sense of this world
Where did you come from?
Your parents… their parents, etc
Must have something eternal
Our universe is composed of three things: Time, Space and Matter
In the beginning (Time), God created the heaven (space) and the earth (matter)
The theory of evolution is just that - a theory!
So how did God create our world?
:2-
The earth had no form and was void
Then God speaks...
Genesis 1:3
The second day God covers the earth in water
Genesis 1:
The third day God makes land and plants
Genesis 1:
The fourth day God makes the sun, moon and stars
Genesis 1:14-19
The fifth day, God makes Birds and Fish
Genesis 1:
Genesis 1:20-
And God made land animals and man on the sixth day
Genesis 1:24
God speaks all these animals into existence but God does something different with man
Genesis 1:26-
Mankind was not created in the likeness of animals but in the likeness of God
It is in man’s nature, personality, moral and spiritual capacities, in emotions, intellect conscience and will - all of these separate man from animals
If we were animals...
No need for morality - we are just animals
No need for sympathy
If we are just evolved animals spinning on a rock in the middle of space, we are truly insignificant nothings - and whether or not someone kills millions of people is of no consequence
III.
God created man in a special place for a special role
God gave creation to man (vs.
28-30)
He tells man that man has dominion over the earth
We all want paradise and God gave it to him
There was no death or killing at this time (29-30)
Sin had not entered the world and broken it
Death is a result of sin
God then declares it all good
God was done
Did God need to rest?
Why did He rest? - it was a pattern
His work was done
God was content - but this is the last “rest” He had - He now waits to finish His work
But even in Christ’s finished work, He still is not done
But now we can rest, not because of a day, but because of a Person
Conclusion
Our God is an active God
He was active in creation, not passive in just letting it happen
His only rest we see in the Bible is taken here
But since then He has been active, actively working out His plan of salvation and redemption
Actively working in our lives
Do you trust in His work?
That He made it all, but that He is at work in your life as well
