WHAT ARE WE HERE FOR?

AMBASSADOR / PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH (; )
"Late one night a salesman drove into a strange city and tried to get a room in a hotel. The clerk informed him that there was no vacancy. Disappointed, he started to leave the lobby when a dignified gentleman offered to share his room with him. Gratefully the traveler accepted his kindness.
Just before retiring, the man who had shown such hospitality, knelt and prayed aloud. In his petition he referred to the stranger by name and asked the Lord to bless him. Upon awakening the next morning, he told his guest it was his habit to read the Bible and commune with God at the beginning of each day, and he asked if he would like to join him. The Holy Spirit had been speaking to the heart of this salesman, and when his host tactfully confronted him with the claims of Christ, he gladly received the Savior.
As the two were ready to part, they exchanged business cards. The new believer was amazed to read, “William Jennings Bryan, Secretary of State.”
—P. R. Van Gorder"
*****
William Jennings Bryan understood that he was paid to go to that hotel by the United States of America.
William Jennings Bryan understood that his career was to look out for the good of the United States of America.
More so, William Jennings Bryan understood that he was no longer just a Secretary of State.
William Jennings Bryan understood that he had been washed by the blood of JESUS CHRIST and his entire, job, role, function and life was caught up in the understanding of Galatians 2:20
Galatians 2:20 ESV
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
, that his life was not his own, but had been purchased by the blood of JESUS CHRIST!
William Jennings Bryan understood, that his life was not his own, but had been purchased by the blood of JESUS CHRIST!
William Jennings Bryan knew who he was à A child of God
William Jennings Bryan knew what he was doing in that hotel that night à Representing CHRIST.
William Jennings Bryan proved that night that the PURPOSE of his life was to be lived as a Representative and Ambassador for his true Boss, his KING, JESUS CHRIST!
What about your life?
What is the purpose of your life in CHRIST?
What is the purpose of you being here in the Church, surrounded by the Body of CHRIST?
purpose |ˈpərpəs| noun the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exist
Today, we have the simple task of seeing how God’s Word answers two questions about the PURPOSE of your life:
WHAT is Your PURPOSE?
1. As an Individual
2. As a Church
It is essential for you and I to see who we are in CHRIST, in order to find the true, purpose, meaning and reason, GOD has given us these lives, in this town, for this time, in this place, for HIS Glory in All things…
WHAT IF, you know there was a PURPOSE in Wherre you live, work, eat, play, pray and live...
WHAT IF you know GOD has a specific PURPOSE and plan for all the good and bad things and people that come into your life each day?
- , says GOD does has a plan and uses all those things for OUR GOOD and HIS GLORY!
that is the HUGE Topic of how GOD Providentially uses HIS Sovereignty over our lives for our good and HIS Glory.
That is too big of a topic for today.
BUT, in light of the fact that we know it is true, we understand that GOD does have a PURPOSE for you Individually…
LET’s LOOK At It Together:
WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE: As an Individual - 2 Cor. 5:11-17
WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE: As an Individual - 2 Cor.
1. As an Individual – TO KNOW CHRIST & to MAKE CHRIST KNOWN!
5:11-17
YOU HAVE 3 INDIVIDUAL PURPOSES IN THESE VERSES
2 Corinthians 5:17–21 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
1. TO KNOW CHRIST v.17
2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
1. TO KNOW CHRIST v.17
PT. GOD’s Word is clear here. IF you are in CHRIST, your Entire Life has Changed! The old person is dead and GOD has given you new desires. Desires to Glory HIM and Live for HIM, rather than just living for yourself. THE FIRST PURPOSE GOD HAS FOR YOUR LIFE, IS THAT YOU WOULD KNOW CHRIST, and have New Life in HIM!
- Once you Submit your life to JESUS CHRIST as your LORD and SAVIOR, you are given work to do, as and our text today indicates. Look at with me.
2. TO KNOW YOUR MINISTRY v.18-19
2 Corinthians 5:18–19 ESV
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
God’s Message from Genesis to Revelation is that Man sin and that sin separates them from GOD. Since our sin keeps us from being Reconciled to GOD, God the Son, JESUS, came, to take our place and to bring us back into fellowship with God the Father.
- Our message to a lost and dying world, is that their sin separates them from GOD, but GOD has made a way to bring them back into fellowship with HIM.
What does that look like? LOOK at v.20-21
3. TO MAKE CHRIST KNOWN v.20-21
2 Corinthians 5:20–21 ESV
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Cor 5:
- Sharing CHRIST with the World, begins with knowing what CHRIST has done for you...
- Sharing CHRIST with the World, begins with knowing what CHRIST has done for you...
- You have New Life in JESUS, you have been brought into Fellowship with GOD and now your entire life is to be lived as HIS Representative to the WORLD!
PT.
- How could you possibly be qualified to do that?
- Well, if you are in CHRIST, you live all of your Life for CHRIST and the world Notices!
PT. If you Know CHRIST, then the ministry of Reconciliation becomes, simply letting the World around you know what JESUS has done for you!
ILLUS. “Sacred Vs. Secular” (in your Work, what you read, what you say, how live at home, church and the office)… No such thing as a separation of SACRED and SECULAR duties.
1. TO KNOW CHRIST v.17
- You Are COMMISSIONED – v.18-20
2. TO KNOW YOUR MINISTRY v.18-19
- You Are Given a MESSAGE – v.21
3. TO MAKE CHRIST KNOWN v.20-21
IF Jesus is the LORD of your life, than HE is the LORD of every single area of your life and as Paul tells the Philippians, your Life should show the World what living for CHRIST, looks Like!
ILLUS. “Sacred Vs. Secular” No such thing, if GOD numbers your days and knows ever hair on your head, or even in your beard =)
- LOOK at this with me.
Philippians 2:12–18 ESV
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.
TRANSITION: OK, So your Purpose as an Individual who has submitted their life to JESUS CHRIST as their LORD and SAVIOR, has 3 parts from our text today.
(ESV)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
FIRST, you Must KNOW CHRIST
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
(ESV)
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing,
15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
THEN, you must KNOW YOUR MINISTRY
16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.
PT.
- You are CHANGED – v.17
- You Are COMMISSIONED – v.18-20
WHEN you KNOW CHRIST, you will MAKE CHRIST KNOWN, to the world around you, every day you live!
- You Are Given a MESSAGE – v.21
ILLUS. “Sacred Vs. Secular” à No such thing, if GOD numbers your days and knows ever hair on your head, or even in your beard =)
TRANSITION:
that is your individual purpose… NOW..
WHAT is Your PURPOSE?
1. As an Individual
2. As a Church – TO EQUIP, ENCOURAGE & BUILD UP IN LOVE the Individual SAINTS, who KNOW CHRIST and are called to MAKE CHRIST KNOWN…
WHAT IS YOUR PUROSE: As a Church
1. TO BE BUILT UP - v.11-13
2. TO BUILD UP - V.15-16
Ephesians 4:11–14 ESV
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

1. TO BE BUILT UP v.11-13
If you are going to be a healthy and functioning part of the Body of CHRIST, you must receive Nourishment from the Head of the body, which is CHRIST!
- You show up to Sunday, to Wednesday, to Bible Study and to meet with one another throughout the week, so the Word of GOD will begin to dwell richly in you and strengthen you to live all of your life, submitted to your LORD, JESUS CHRIST!
2. TO BUILD UP others v.15-16

PT. You gather together to be equipped, but the one who grows and equips you is JESUS… so what does it look like to build one another up in love?
- To Work together as a church looks like two guys (TOM and WILL) who went out to build a building together one day
— Tom was the brick setter and Will was putting all the mortar in place for the building.
— One day Tom showed up really early for work. You see, Tom’s son had a soccer tournament at 3pm, so Tom showed up around 4 am to get started laying bricks without waiting for Will.
— Pretty soon Tom had used up all his bricks and had about a 20 ft high building all set in place… with no mortar.
------ Tom made an impressive stack of bricks, but he did not make a building. You can’t have a building without Mortar
------ Will showed up late that day because his daughter had a dance recital at 8:30 in the morning. He saw the stack of bricks and thought he would work ahead too.
------ Will climbed the tall scaffolding and proceeded to use all the remaining mortar on top of the 20’ high building.
------ Pretty soon, will was out of mortar and had put a very impressive pile of mortar on top of the bricks 12” high.
------------ Now, I know i’m not an engineer, but the truth is neither one of them built a building that day, they just piled stuff up and felt good about what they did because they used all their supplies...
- GOD gave them both, skill ability and breath in their lungs to be able to do their work.
But without working together, what did they build? - Nothing....
---- -----------------------
HOW do we Build One Another Up in Love…
- We work together towards the Same single Purpose!
-----
"There is a famous story from the days when Sir Christopher Wren was building St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Wren was taking a tour one day and asked one of the building workers, “What are you doing?”
"There is a famous story from the days when Sir Christopher Wren was building St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Wren was taking a tour one day and asked one of the building workers, “What are you doing?”
The workman replied, “I am cutting this stone to the right size.”
He asked a second man working elsewhere, “What are you doing?”
“I am earning money,” he retorted.
When Wren asked a third man, the man paused from his work and excitedly replied, “I am helping Sir Christopher Wren to build St. Paul’s Cathedral!”
As Christians, we must remember our lofty position in the Body—we are here, in the Spirit’s energy, working to help the Lord Jesus Christ build His church."

ILLUS. “Training Retreat – to Equip the Saints for the WORK of the MINISTRY”… what Minsitry? – back to … the ministry of RECONCILIATION!
“You are now entering the Mission Field”
TRANSITION: Your individual Purpose is Fueled by your gathering together with other believers.
We literally come in, in order to go out.
- Every Sunday, Study, Fellowship, on the sidewalk with another part of the Bodyu of CHRIST, is meant to equip us, Build us up, to send us out, to MAKE JESUS KNOWN, to a lost and dying world.
- – our gathering is equipping us to really perceive who we are in CHRIST, that we may let the world know, what they may have IN CHRIST!
(ESV)
15 For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints,
16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers,
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,
RECAP:
WHAT is Your PURPOSE?
1. As an Individual
2. As a Church
CONCLUSION:
William Jennings Bryan knew his Purpose in this life.
He knew who he was as an individual ambassador for JESUS CHRIST.
Once that young salesman met Mr. Bryan, believed in JESUS and submitted his life to CHRIST, he immediately had a new need in his life.
He needed to find a body of believers who had submitted their lives to JESUS CHRIST, and faithfully taught the Word of GOD.
He needed that, in order to be built up, to be equipped, as a saint, to do the work of the ministry, that GOD immediately had given him, as an Ambassador of JESUS CHRIST!
NOTE: Did you see the part in , where it talks about how long the New Creation in CHRIST, should be in church for or go to school for before he is allowed to carry the message of reconciliation to the rest of the world as an Ambassador of CHRIST?
Did you see how that is a rare privilege, that is only given to a few who love the LORD enough to represent him?
I did not see that in those verse either.
- What we saw today, was that when GOD saved the individual, HE Equips them to do HIS Work, for HIS Glory, in this world.
APPLY: unfortunately, that means two things for you and I today.
1. It means that no matter how much more education God allows to receive, I will NEVER be More or Less Called to be HIS AMBASSADOR to the world!
2. It also means that no lack of education or understanding WILL EVER DISQUALIFY you & I, from being an Ambassador for JESUS CHRIST, to all those who sit next to us at work, at school, at the hospital, the nursing home, the local starbucks or on the tractor, every day, that GOD gives us life to live for HIM!
Who you are… Is an Ambassador of JESUS CHRIST
Who we are as a Church… is a Body of Ambassadors, gathering to remind ourselves and deepen our understanding of what GOD’s Word says about WHO GOD IS and Who we are in CHRIST, so we can go and tell the world about our King.
IMPLEMENT: This is what I want you to do, today. At lunch. Think about, write down or send a text message to yourself, with a list of 5 places you will be given an opportunity to be an ambassador for JESUS CHRIST, this week.
Keep that list with you. Pray over those opportunities and pray for GOD to give you and opportunity to show HIS Love and Share HIS Word with others this week.
If you find out, the people there are saved, you will encourage them in CHRIST.
è If you find out, the people there are saved, you will encourage them in CHRIST.
If you find out they are lost, you will have at least shown them the love of CHRIST, and carried forth your mission as an Ambassador of JESUS CHRIST.
Need ENcouragment?
- Me too.
- That is why we come here.
- That is why we meet with other believers.
SR – I have a tendency of reading things written by a lot of old dead pastors. I am amazed at how many of them end of talking about the amazing blessing of having fellowship with believers and making sure you take time to have fellowship with believers.
- When you sit down to talk about God’s Word together, you love each other enough, to bring your hearts and minds, back to the Word of GOD.
- What a blessing from God to the believer.
- What a blessing from GOD to the person who is sitting an the next table and sees the Love you have for GOD and for one another IN CHRIST!

often the strongest and deepest relationships are developed within the context of Christian ministry. There’s a special camaraderie among people who work toward life’s most noble goals and see God achieve eternal results through their efforts. Guard those relationships carefully, and cultivate as many as possible.

- John MacArthur
LISTEN, to what JESUS said in
LISTEN, to what JESUS said in
(ESV)
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
So… Believer, Saint, Ambassador of the Almighty Creator of the Universe…
- UNDERSTAND THIS.
- When you gather together to Hear the WORD OF GOD,
- The Word of GOD instructs you, in order to SEND You, to a world that needs GOD’s Word.
- Show the Love of JESUS, and Share the Word of GOD, and you will fulfill your purpose as an Ambassador of JESUS CHRIST, in this World as individuals, and as a body of Believers.
We are called to Build one another up in love and that does not just happen Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. That happens all throughout the week, as we see each other, work together, pray for one another and call each other to live our live for the glory of JESUS CHRIST!
- My prayer, is that you will place your full hope, confidence and trust in doing this, Not in yourself, but in JESUS CHRIST, through prayer, through reading HIS Word, and by learning to Lean on HIM as HE gives you opportunities to represent HIM to the world this week.
PRAY.
