Introduction
There was a cartoon that came on when I was child.
It encouraged children from all walks of life to do things like conserve water, refrain from littering, and be mindful of unsafe things like playing with fire.
Earth!
Fire!
Wind!
Water!
Heart!
Go planet!
By your powers combined I am Captain Planet!
Captain Planet, he's our hero,
Gonna take pollution down to zero,
He's our powers magnified,
And he's fighting on the planet side.
The planeteers did all they could until they became outmatched and then they combined their powers to overcome the polluters.
Similar to our walk with Christ.
There are some instances you can overcome with just kindness or just peace but there are times when the entire fruit of the spirit is necessity.
In chapter 6 of Galatians, Paul encourages those who are spiritual to restore gently.
Well what does being spiritual mean?
How is a person spiritual?
Spirit or Spiritual denotes blowing or breathing, it’s essence is non corporeal and immaterial, infused by the deity of God.
states The oracle of the word of the LORD concerning Israel: Thus declares the LORD, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him:
You may have a question, I want to help restore my brothers and sisters.
I want to help restore my marriage, my children but am I exemplifying the spirit that is needed to help those who are caught in transgressions.
Restoration is deeper than pointing out flaws, anyone can do that.
Paul is writing this letter at the expense of Judaizers.
These legalist discredited and denounced the things that Paul was teaching.
Paul brings the attention back to spiritual things.
Grace instead of law, faith instead of exclusively focusing on works and most of all the spirit as opposed to the flesh.
Walk in The Spirit
Walking under the divine direction of the Holy Spirit is the only way we can be delivered from our flesh filled lust.
Walking in the Spirit means initially setting our minds on spiritual things.
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
The author then follows that with spiritually minded things are things filled with life and peace.
You have to surround yourself with positive people and information, peaceful things and peaceful people.
I cannot walk in the spirit surrounded by negativity.
Check your surroundings.
God did not give you a new life to live in a dead way.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by Grace.
Verse 17 explains that the flesh and spirit are at war with each other.
The idea behind seeking flesh desires, is those desires are simply irrational and self gratifying.
“For these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things you please.”
Understand that the spiritual journey is a daily battle - For I do not understand my own actions.
For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
Verse 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The word led in this text means to be influenced to follow a recommended course of action.
Understand if I am being led consistently by the Holy Spirit, I have Christ to keep me in line I do not need your external extra credit.
Acknowledging Flesh is not the Problem
Actions of the flesh are clear and plain.
The definition of evident in this text actually means they are clear to the point of shining.
We do not have to define these things, because we already know what they are .
Understand this attitude of the Judaizers was leading to much strife.
Understand that church splits do not come from spiritual place just like jealousy, adultery and enmities do not come from a spiritual place.
If we belong to Christ and still consistently fall victim to these issues, old things have not passed away and nothing is new in our life.
A Christian may fall temporarily into these sins, but our contrition and spirit of misery should prompt us to change.
Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
Understand that practicing envy, just like consistently disputing and causing strife will have gate trouble just like the idolater and the adulterer.
One Fruit
Have you ever heard someone say there some things I am still working on.
Understand that the FRUIT of the spirit is singular.
There aren’t nine fruits you get to choose from.
There is one fruit composed of nine elements.
The first three are in relation to God.
Love, joy and peace
Love: The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
Joy : You also became imitators of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much tribulation with the joy of the Holy Spirit
Peace: And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The next three are in relation to man.
Patience (Longsuffering) Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
Kindness: Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
Goodness: Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
One’s inner life
Faithfulness: For we live by faith, not by sight.
Gentleness: restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness.
Self Control: Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.
They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
There is no law against the practice of these virtues.
Understand that we all belong to Christ if we have been baptized.
Understand we belong to Christ if we have truly crucified that old man, his passions and desires.
If we are going identify as Christians we ought to be maturing.
