loosing control of the situation.
The point of the masquerade ball was to forget the trouble outside and to live as if it did not exist!
being forced to change.

Theme
Isaac sought to deceive Abimelech to secure his own safety.

Context
Did you do your homework this week? = &
It is important that we remember what just transpired in the last section 1-6 for us to be at this point.

6 So Isaac settled in Gerar. 7 When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,” because she was attractive in appearance. 8 When he had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with Rebekah his wife. 9 So Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she is your wife. How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’ ” 10 Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.” 11 So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.” 12 And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, 13 and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.
6 So Isaac settled in Gerar.
Just recieved these promises from God.
seeking faithfulness
following Christ is not for the faint of heart!
Are you under the false impression that Christianity is for the weak? That following Christ is easy?
7 When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,”
Isaac lies to them...
right after receiving promises of God
What is it that makes us choose deception?
?
for he feared to say, “My wife,” thinking, “lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,”
Fear God not men.
Genesis 3:10 ESV
And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
Genesis 12:13 ESV
Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”
Genesis 19:30 ESV
Now Lot went up out of Zoar and lived in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to live in Zoar. So he lived in a cave with his two daughters.
Gen 19.30
Genesis 12:13 ESV
Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”
1 Samuel 15:24 ESV
Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
What do you fear?
Isaacs improper fear caused him to sin:
against his wife
against the people
against God
Mark 5:36 ESV
But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Fear God not men.
Genesis 3:10 ESV
And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
because she was attractive in appearance.
Abraham - Isaac
Sarah - Rebekah
Barren & Beautiful
Genesis 24:16 ESV
The young woman was very attractive in appearance, a maiden whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up.
Often 1 Sin leads to another!
Ephesians 5:25 ESV
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Genesis 12:13 ESV
Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.”
Abraham - Isaac - Us
Even good men make bad choices.
8 When he had been there a long time,
Home free
the deceit of deceit
Devil promises us...
Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw Isaac laughing with Rebekah his wife.
Building our own burdens
married without enjoyment
unclear what Abimelech saw
Proverbs 5:18 ESV
Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth,
unclear what Abimelech saw
Hebrew word for flirt!
There is a way that you laugh with your wife that you don’t with your sister!
9 So Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, she is your wife.

A lying tongue is but for a moment. Truth is the daughter of time; and, in time, it will come out.

the deceit of deceit...
we will be found out
Abraham / Isaac
Abimelech
When we lie to others we only lie to ourselves… Where are you living a lie?
God knows all our sin.
Numbers 32:23 ESV
But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.
Job 10:14 ESV
If I sin, you watch me and do not acquit me of my iniquity.
Hebrews 9:27 ESV
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?”
How then could you say, ‘She is my sister’?”
Fear
selfishness
When we lie to others we are not sparing them, we are sparing ourselves!
Isaac said to him, “Because I thought, ‘Lest I die because of her.’ ”
Isaac was not serving his wife
Ephesians 5:25 ESV
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Isaac was not serving his neighbor
Isaac was serving himself !
Selfishness is the birth place of Sin
Where in your life are you most apt to serve yourself?
How do you plan on being a better servant to others?
10 Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
History is a Teacher!!
Genesis 20:3–7 ESV
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.” Now Abimelech had not approached her. So he said, “Lord, will you kill an innocent people? Did he not himself say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this.” Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. Therefore I did not let you touch her. Now then, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”
See what issues this caused in the past...
= See what issues this caused in the past...
no mention of divine intervention here
the lesson was learned!!
Sin is Sin is Sin
even those without the Law know this
11 So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, “Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
Respect given that was not recieved
Gentiles command = God’s command
Fear of man = self destructive
Fear of God = self preserving
And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.
The end of all sin is death.
Are we willing to warn others of the dangers of sin?
12 And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, 13 and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.
Same year
year of famine
God = stay in this land
God = I will bless you
supernaturally blessed = hundredfold!
Lesson from this text = Tell lies and prosper?
All sin will be exposed and dealt with!
There is no sin to great to be forgiven.
Expose the structure of the text.
Main points should support the theme.
points should follow textual sequence unless good reason to change.
use simple and clear transitions to give structure to movement.
Use verse references before quoting so that listeners can read along.
Use personal observances to illustrate difficult concepts.
CONCLUSION
All sin is exposed and dealt with by God! We are fools therefore to listen to the deception of our own sinful flesh and the lies of Satan. All sins are either exposed and dealt with in the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, or exposed and dealt with in your own flesh in the judgement of God. Therefore I beg you to expose your sin to God, ask for forgiveness, and repent.
Be brief.
Don’t introduce new material.
narrow the focus don’t expand it.
Clinch the goal.
Give concrete applications.
Goal
Do not be deceived by the false promises of Satan.
Application
What “secret” sin(s) are you self deceived by?
What steps are you going to take to expose and repent from it (them)?
How do you plan on holding yourself accountable to this decision?
