1. The King has provided His knights with everything that is needed to win the war:

2 Peter 1:1–4 NKJV
1 Simon Peter, a bondservant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

2. gives three instructions to the knight of God.

Ephesians 6:18–20 NKJV
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Eph 6.

A. Pray always.

B. Be watchful for all the saints.

C. Open your mouth boldly.

3. If we will listen and apply these, we will win the war with Satan by the power of God.

BODY:

1. PRAY ALWAYS

A. Why is prayer the first instruction on this list?

1. Because it is where the Christian has access to the Father.

John 16:23–24 NKJV
23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
John 16.23

2. How then does the Christian have access to the Father in prayer through Jesus?

John 14:13–15 NKJV
13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. 15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
John 14:12–15 NKJV
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. 15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
Jm 14.13-
John 14:13–14 NKJV
13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
John 14.
John 14:13 NKJV
13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

A. We must ask or pray in His name.

3. What then is asking in Jesus’ name?

1 John 5:12–15 NKJV
12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. 14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
1 John 5.12-

A. Asking according to His will.

4. What then is asking according to His will?

1 John 3:22 NKJV
22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

A. Keeping His commandments.

B. Why did Jesus alway receive what He asked of the Father?

Luke 22:42 NKJV
42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”

1. Because He asked according to the Father’s will.

A. How did He ask according to the Father’s will?

John 8:28–29 NKJV
28 Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. 29 And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”
John 8.28-

B. He always did those things that pleased the Father.

1. This makes prayer two-fold:

C. A petition to God

James 4:2–3 NKJV
2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
Phil 4.
Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
James 4.2-

1. Jesus petitioned God on several occasions.

Luke 5:16 NKJV
16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.
Lk. 5
Matthew 14:23 NKJV
23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.
Mark 1:35 NKJV
35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.
Luke 6:12 NKJV
12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 9:18 NKJV
18 And it happened, as He was alone praying, that His disciples joined Him, and He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”

A. Notices a common theme among all of these verses:

1. -He Himself often withdrew
2. -He had sent the multitudes away
3. He went out and departed to a solitary place
4. He went out to the mountain to pray
5. He was alone praying

2. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, and Jesus taught them to pray.

Luke 11:1–4 NKJV
1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”
And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”
lk
Lk 11.1-
Luke 11:1–2 NKJV
1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” 2 So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

A. Matthew’s account of this gives more insight as to the simplicity of this prayer.

Matthew 6:5–13 NKJV
5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Matt 6.5-
1. He tells His disciples not to be like the hypocrites, praying in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men.
A. He tells His disciples, ‘If you are going to say this extravagant prayer, go into your room and shut the door.’
2. In the next verse, He returns to the hypocrites, calling them heathens and telling the disciples not to use vain words, for the heathens think that they will be heard for their many words.
3. He then gives an example of a short, public prayer.
Matt 6.
Matthew 6:9–13 NKJV
9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

B. We know this had to be an example of a public prayer, because Jesus was not against long, private prayer.

1. Jesus prayed all night in
Luke 6:12 NKJV
12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
2. Jesus counseled His close friends to pray with Him for an hour.
Mark 14:32–37 NKJV
32 Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed. 34 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch.” 35 He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” 37 Then He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?
Matthew 26:36–40 NKJV
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.” 39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” 40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?
-
Matthew 26:40 NKJV
40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?
Matt 26.36-
A. Notice six things:
Public prayer is not praying with a group; it is praying in public to be seen.
He told the entire group to stay while He prayed.
He took Peter, James, and John a little further.
He then left Peter, James, and John and went further yet to pray Himself.
Upon His return to Peter, James, and John, He did not rebuke them as a group.
Even with His close friends present, this was a private prayer not to be heard by the entire group.

D. A lifestyle.

Isaiah 59:1–2 NKJV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.

1. If our lifestyle is not right, then we do not have prayer in our lives.

John 9:31 NKJV
31 Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.

A. If our prayers are going to be heard, they must be asked in Jesus’ name.

John 16:23–24 NKJV
23 “And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

B. Asking in Jesus’ name is keeping His commandments.

1 John 3:24 NKJV
24 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
1 John 3:22 NKJV
22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

C. Therefore, our lives are a continual prayer.

Colossians 3:17 NKJV
17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

CONCLUSION:

1. gives the first instruction to the knight of God.

Ephesians 6:18 NKJV
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

A. Are you praying always?

1. If you are praying always, following the instruction of God to win the war, you are God’s knight, protected by Him.

1 John 5:14–15 NKJV
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
1 Jn 5.14-
Rom 8
Romans 8:37 NKJV
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

2. If not, you are asking amiss and you are in danger of losing the war.

James 4:3 NKJV
3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
