Our Father who is in heaven. . .

the term hypocrite originally referred to actors who used large masks to portray the roles they were playing.

MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (1985). Matthew (p. 364). Chicago: Moody Press.hypocrite - originally referred to actors who used large masks to portray the roles they were playing.

Hypocrites are actors, pretenders, persons who play a role. What they say and do does not represent what they themselves feel or believe but only the image they hope to create.

Hypocrites are actors, pretenders, persons who play a role. What they say and do does not represent who they really are but only an image they hope to create.

God is Father to those who are His children through Jesus Christ.

- But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believed in His name.
Only in the sense of Creator is God the Father of unbelievers.
- Do we not all have one father? Has not one God created us?
- “As some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His offspring.’”
- You are of your father the devil.

The hypocritical scribes and Pharisees prayed for the same purpose they did everything else-to attract attention and bring honor to themselves

A Father Who is Approachable

- Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul in falsehood and has not sworn deceitfully.
- Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in the time of need.

Knowing God as our heavenly Father means the end of fear.

The pagans undoubtedly experienced fear with their gods.

Nothing is so sacred that Satan will not invade it. In fact, the more sacred something is, the more he desires to profane it. Surely few things please him more than to come between believers and their Lord in the sacred intimacy of prayer. Sin will follow us into the very presence of God; and no sin is more powerful or destructive than pride. In those moments when we would come before the Lord in worship and purity of heart, we may be tempted to worship ourselves.

- We confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?

Knowing God as our heavenly Father removes uncertainties and gives hope.

Knowing He is our heavenly Father removes uncertainties and gives hope.

If an earthly father will spare no effort to help and protect his children, how much more will the heavenly Father love, protect, and help His children?
- If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!

Knowing God as our heavenly Father settles the matter of loneliness.

Even if we are rejected by family, friends, and the rest of the world, we know we are never alone.
- He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.”

Knowing God as our heavenly Father should settle the matter of selfishness.

He is “our “ Father, showing that we are fellow children in God’s household. We pray with a focus on everyone, not just one.

Knowing God as our heavenly Father settles the matter of resources.

All of the resources of heaven are available to us when we trust God as our heavenly Supplier.

Knowing God as our heavenly Father should settle the matter of obedience.

If Jesus, God’s true Son, came down from heaven not to do His own will but the Father’s (), how much more should we, as adopted children, do only His will.
- For whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.
