From your lips to my ears

James 3:10 NASB95
from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.
Our mouth, our tongue speaks volumes, some speak more volumes than others, but it still speaks volumes. Our lips, our tongue speak blessings and curses. (Insert personal Illustration of both good and bad use of tongue) The wise, the prudent learn to control their tongue so as to bring glory to God, but now the question, but how?
Pro18 has lots of words to the fool and to the wise regarding that old tongue, today we will take a glimpse at some of the things we can find as we continue our series “Proverbs of Wisdom for Today’s World.”

I. Deep Water

Proverbs 18:4 NASB95
4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
So where do these deep waters come from that this fountain is fed from?
John 7:38 NASB95
38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
From your innermost being, from your heart. So what we have in our heart matters for what is in the heart is going to come out the mouth via the tongue.
Proverbs 20:5 NASB95
5 A plan in the heart of a man is like deep water, But a man of understanding draws it out.
Understanding leads to wisdom; wisdom draws out the deep water, where is the deep water? It is in the heart
Proverbs 16:22 NASB95
22 Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, But the discipline of fools is folly.
Understanding is a fountain that is powered by wisdom. Our lips will speak what is in our heart. What we allow into our heart matters.

II. A Fools Words

From the heart
Every human interaction offers you the chance to make things better or to make things worse.
Proverbs 18:6 NASB95
6 A fool’s lips bring strife, And his mouth calls for blows.
Barbara Brown Taylor standing is a fountain of life; wisdom is the application of understanding
(Slide) Have you ever had anyone say words to you that infuriate you? - as mentioned before words can build up, can encourage, can edify, but they can divide and bring division too. Spoken words, written words can have the same effect on people. Bring strife
UndSo
Proverbs 18:7 NASB95
7 A fool’s mouth is his ruin, And his lips are the snare of his soul.
Words can bring destruction not only to others but even to yourself and your very soul.
Luke 12:8 NASB95
8 “And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God;
Better yet, look at what Matthew has to say
Matthew 10:32–33 NASB95
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
(Slide) Confess and be confessed, do not confess, deny and you will be denied (expand on this)
Proverbs 18:8 NASB95
8 The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.
Words may sound good, but does that make them true? Still they enter in and can enter the heart so again, be careful what you allow in. Check things out to see if they are true but you just accept them as true.
(Insert Illustration)
John 3:16 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
What does it mean to believe? Do we need anything more? What about confession, repentance, baptism, obedience? While Jn3:16 is true, it need to be expanded on shouldn’t it?
Proverbs 18:13 NASB95
13 He who gives an answer before he hears, It is folly and shame to him.
James says
James 1:19 NASB95
19 This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;
(Illustration) - Bill collector ----- to a soul collector!
The man who does not listen is the fool, and it is a folly and a shame to him.
We need to listen more than speak, then speak words of wisdom, words of truth to people, but first we need to know where people are coming from.

III. Words: It’s a matter of life and death

Proverbs 18:21 NASB95
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
The wise man brings word’s of life to people for we know
Romans 10:17 NASB95
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
This world was brought into existence by words
Gen1:
Genesis 1:3 NASB95
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
(Slide) So how can our tongue bring life to men?
(Slide) Bring the words of Jesus - - - expand on each of these
(Slide) Bring words of encouragement
(Slide) Bring words of correction
John 6:68 NASB95
68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 NASB95
11 Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
2 Timothy 3:16 NASB95
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
Why are words important today?
2 Timothy 3:17 NASB95
17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
(Slide) Let’s all turn to Jam3:1-12
