What do we exalt in this life?
What do we exalt in this life?
We exalt jobs. We exalt success. We exalt eloquence. We exalt charisma. We exalt a sense of humor. We exalt beauty.
How about money? We exalt money. When we think about it all the time, we exalt it. When we want to possess more and more, we exalt it.
How about self? We want ourselves to be well thought of so much so that we show ourselves to be good and more righteous than we are. If you have made mistakes and been evil in the past, it is time to confess it and move in the right direction, not attempt to bury it where no one can find it. It will haunt you for all eternity.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

The one who is blessed and loved by God is not the one who has the best job, or success, or eloquence, or charisma, or a sense of humor, or beauty!
The criteria of God’s love doesn’t have anything to do with any of those things or a number of those things. He isn’t looking for the most wealthy and would you believe that He doesn’t love the one who is focused on loving him/herself.
God loves the one who is fulfilling the requirements of the law because their mind is set, not on earthly things, on the things that God wants. Your mind and your heart must desire to do the things that Jesus and God wants. If you have received freedom from condemnation and death that you deserved because at one time you were focused on the flesh, you need to remain focused on doing what pleases God.

The Pharisees exalted the flesh over the spirit. They exalted man and money over God and His revelation.
No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
“The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one dot of the Law to become void.

Jesus tells us that we are not able to make the revealed word of God null. It is able to enlighten everyone of sin and the true righteousness of God.
Left to our own devices, we lift up ideas and things that are an abomination to God. Do you ever really believe that? If you do, how much harder should you be studying the scriptures?
You can’t force your way into it by twisting the scriptures!
He then provides us all with a very practical example of the sin that many Pharisees may very well find themselves wrapped up in. Adultery.
If you know what the law says about marriage, why would you ever consider it okay to divorce your wife who you have entered into a covenant union with and marry another?
To support this teaching about exalting our own ideas in order to assume our entrance into heaven, Jesus reveals a shocking story that we call a parable.

“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’ ”

The man who lived a life that was comfortable and easily accepted by the world wishes he could go back in time and make a change before it was too late. While the one who suffered and relied on God was given a life of comfort for all eternity.
“Earth will be the length of your heaven. Eternity will be the length of your Hell.”

Physical death is not the end! There is no wait time to the next place.

There is no changing the outcome. You aren’t going to cross the Chasm.
You can’t pay for your sin with suffering.
We see in this parable a glimpse into the reality that is going on just on the other side of this life. We notice the instantaneous nature of going from one place to the next.

Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.
Don’t use your wealth poorly!
Don’t rely on your heritage.
Give to the man in in need (Good Samaritan)
Don’t rely on anything other than the word of God to understand what is pleasing to God.
What is pleasing to God is not what is pleasing to man.
If you are looking for a sign to make sure that the risk is worth taking, you won’t find it.
