What does it mean to be a man? Look around. What's so desperately needed where we live, in our church, country and in our world, are men who embrace all that God created them to be. To get there we need to dig deep into the doctrine of manhood.

Momentum: Moving Into Biblical Manhood

INTRO: (Me)
1 Corinthians 16:13–14 ESV
13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love.
As I read this verses that Paul wrote to the Corinthian church I so enlighten about manhood. I’ve been taken you through the Bible and seeing what the biblical description of manhood is. This is a doctrinal study of manhood.
Again, we are not interested in being politically correct, or even church correct. My desire is to be biblically correct.
This passage is a great jumping off point because it points us to four imperatives that shape our manhood. In a stuck society and church we need to create MoMENtuem - when men start to move they lead every other person around them. Society will change and the church will change.
Review: Work To Enjoy / Will To Obey / Women To Love - messed up. Sin is the problem. I don’t have what it takes. Jesus, the second Adam, came and reconciled us back to God.
(We) Be Watchful
Stand Firm
Be strong
How To Be A Strong Man
Strong =
having the power to move heavy weights or perform other physically demanding tasks
able to withstand great force or pressure
(God) - Jesus come along and by His model and example defines what it means to be a strong man. He shows us how to be strong as men. Jesus
(God) - Jesus come along and by His model and example defines what it means to be a strong man. He shows us how to be strong as men.
What Strength Is Not
Positional
Possessions
Power
Jesus turns this definition on it’s head.
Matthew 20:17 ESV
17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them,
Matthew 20:17–19 ESV
17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death 19 and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
Luke
Matthew 20:17
Ex: Son of Man will be delivered over… to be mocked and flogged and crucified
This is the Gospel! Jesus modeled strength by sharing the Good News first! Before Jesus defined manhood he communicated what looks like a very weak scene.
Jesus did not come to FLEX but to demonstrate FAITH
The Pharisees Got It Wrong
Ex: Pharisee - bible knowledge, job - messiah, they were looking for a positional, possessions, power. They thought the Messiah would show up as an earthly King not a carpenter. They missed it! Instead of flexing Jesus suffered and served.
Transition: To be a biblically strong man four exercises need to be a part of my daily routine.
Matthew 20:20–21 ESV
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”
Matthew 20:20-21
1. A Strong Man Exercises Soul Care
Ex: The sons of Zebedee - motives where wrong, perspective wrong BUT they knew to accomplish anything they had to be close to Jesus. They got their mama to ask… Come on man.
Sabbath = rest, reorienting, rooting, refueled
Ill: Chick Fil A / Commandments 4th Sabbath 1-3 God 5-10 People 4th is the hinge
On the 7th day God rested. 6th day Gen formed man and woman. The 7th day they rested. They didn’t need rest because they had not worked. They rested to work.
The sabbath was not created to rest from work but to rest for work
Sabbath is a gift from God. It is a reminder that we need Him. When I get tired I’m reminded that I need Him.
OT - They worked 6 days and rested. Cut 1/7th of their business, full day off, but produced more. God, we can do more with you in 6 days than we can do without you in 7 days.
If Satan can’t make you bad he will make you busy
A strong man exercises soul care by spending his most precious resource, time, on things that matter. Or, are you spending your time to get position, power and more processions? Are you busy?
Arg: Slow down Mark. You are too busy. You are going to burn out... You don’t slow down you stop. Balance and pace are myths. Bible says to love God with all your soul, heart, mind and strength. That’s not balanced its not a slow pace.
I’m going to work 6 days and then stop. Those are my reps in being a strong man. (What is coming to Brevard)
App:
Exercise A Rhythm Of Rest
Divert Daily
Divert Daily
Withdraw Weekly
Quit Quarterly
Abandon Annually
App - Some of the worst decisions in the world are made in exhaustion.
To give others my best I must have a rhythm of rest
Transition: To be a biblically strong man four exercises need to be a part of my daily routine.
2. A Strong Man Exercises Grit
Matthew 20:22–23 ESV
22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
Matthew 20:22 ESV
22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.”
cup, you will drink my cup
Matt 20:
Matthew 20:22–23 ESV
22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
Ex: Cup = God’s wrath
Ex:
Isaiah and Jeremiah, prophets, foretold about God’s wrath being poured out on sin. Jesus, in the garden prayed and asked God to let this cup pass from me. Not my will… but your will. Jesus was asking for Oprah’s way.
Only one way to reconcile us back to God. Jesus went to the Cross and paid for our sins. He was the PROPITIATION for our sin. Then we are IMPUTED with His righteousness.
PROPITIATION = payment that satisfies
IMPUTED = His righteousness credited to our account
These two disciples didn’t know what they were asking. If we are to be strong men then we need to understand that we are going to have to bear the weight of sin and unrighteousness in the world.
Grit is not a popular word. Grit is not popular. Comfort is popular.
To exercise grit means to take responsibility for things that are not your fault. Bear burdens. says that we need to love our wives as Christ loved the church. Jesus was a perfect man that never sinned. How many times did He sin? How much responsibility did He take for sin? ALL OF IT!
Men, everything in our world is our responsibility regardless of whose fault it is. This takes grit!
Ill: Family fighting on the way to church.
Men you have two options: 1. Be Right 2. Take Responsibility - Jesus didn’t show up to be right. He showed up to be the Savior. He went to the cross and gritted it out.
Gritty men take responsibility. Move through the pain and endure it on behalf of others.
Proverbs 24:16 ESV
16 for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.
Grit does the right thing over a long period of time. Run towards the pain on behalf of other.
It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt Him deeply. - A.W. Tozer
App: To be strong is not to be x tough. It is to be + tender for and with the people God has placed in your life. It is to expose yourself to great pain to benefit of those you love. When you get knocked down you get back up.
Transition: To be a biblically strong man four exercises need to be a part of my daily routine.
3. A Strong Man Exercises Submission
Matthew 20:23 ESV
23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
Matthew 20:22 ESV
22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.”
Ex: Mom asked… Jesus responded that He has to submit to His Father. I can’t use my position of authority for my own wants, whims or wishes. I’ve got to submit to my Father.
If you disobey authority you will ultimately disobey the Ultimate authority.
If you disobey authority you will ultimately disobey the Ultimate authority.
A man is never as strong as when he submits.
Arg: Mark, I’m the head of my house and my family us going to submit to me. How is that working? But, says that my wife is to submit to me. Yes but...
App: Do you exercise submission or do you think you always have to be the boss? Do you have to be right or do you take responsibility?
Ephesians 5:21 ESV
21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Do not expect God to give you authority until you submit to authority.
No one can keep you from what God has
No one can keep you from what God has
Ill: Youth Pastor/Ebenezer Baptist Church - shorts, fist fight. Thad Dowdle, ’m going to ask you to wear a pair of Khaki pants. I submitted to authority. It wasn’t about who was right. Pastor Dowdle was teaching a 20 yr old boy how to be a man.
App: Do you exercise submission or do you think you always have to be the boss? Do you have to be right or do you take responsibility?
Transition: To be a biblically strong man four exercises need to be a part of my daily routine.
4. A Strong Man Exercises Service
Matthew 20:24–28 ESV
24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:20–28 ESV
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. 21 And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” 22 Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” 24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers.
Matthew 20:
Gentiles lord it over them / it shall not be so / must be a servant / serve / give his life
Matthew 20:
Matthew 20:24–25 ESV
24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
Matt 20:
Matthew 20:24 ESV
24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers.
Ex: Gentiles - lost people lord it over. When we act to exercise authority we are far from a strong man.
It is so among me - Hypocrite? The reason I’m not a hypocrite is because I admit my hypocrisy. The self admitted hypocrite is no longer a hypocrite. They are just a sinner saved by grace.
What do you do when you realize your the most influential person at the table? My drift is to flex. This is my house and you will live by my rules...
I have expectations that things will be done for me.
What do you do when you realize that you are the most influential person in the room? I flex.
What do you do when you realize that you are the most influential person in the room? I flex.
Everybody want to be a servant until you are treated like one.
A strong man’s goal is not to climb the ladder but to bow down and lift others.
Arg: Do you not want us to succeed and be leaders? YES but get there being a man that serves others. Then recognize who places you in that position.
Philippians 2:4–7 ESV
4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Phil 2:4-
servant
Jesus washed feet
App: You do for people what no body else want to do.
Transition: To be a biblically strong man four exercises need to be a part of my daily routine.
Conclusion:
Imagine the man in your life that had the most influence on your life. The strongest man you know or have known.
What if? He exercised...
Soul Care? rhythm of rest to give you his best
Grit? tenderly loves you consistently
Submission? took responsibility
Service? He did for you what no one else was willing to do
What if the most influence man in your life was that man? Your life would be different, the church would be different, this county would be different.
Man look up… 10 years from now I’m going to ask this same question. Who was the most influential, strongest man in your life? I want you to be that man.
The measure of a man is not power, position or possessions. It is living these exercises. Your wake will make a difference...
Next Moves:
Gospel - accept Christ as the forgiver of your sins and leader of your life.
Truth - how has this truth transformed you? Commit to God.
Generosity -
Prayer - That we would be strong men because of following and being empowered by the strongest man Jesus.
