Upsetting the Equilibrium
Little children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
5 They are from the world; therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them.
6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us.
From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
This world sucks.
People are cruel, unloving, unforgiving, malicious, and selfish.
Well that’s it.
Let’s get back to Ultimate Frisbee.
Analyzing the Discrepancy
Someone raise their hand and tell me one positive thing they’ve seen in the news recently.
In our culture, the loudest voice wins.
Popular media only covers the bad and evil things of this world because it sells.
It is easier to continue the story of negativity because it currently outweighs the positives in our world.
For instance, our culture popularizes taking our own life.
How many have seen 13 reasons why?
While this may not have been the intention of the show, it has popularized suicide—has made it an acceptable out.
The world tells us when the tough gets going, an acceptable answer is to no longer live.
I am not here to tell you that you that life is easy.
Living is hard.
I am also not here to tell you that being a Christ-follower will make life easier.
In fact, quite the opposite.
Disclosing the clue to resolution
So, we have a battle amongst us.
We have these principalities of darkness (the influence of the evil one), who wants us to give up.
Satan does not want us to live.
Our fight on this earth is not flesh and blood.
Most of you will never pick up a sword or spear or gun.
No, our fight is against the spirits that do not confess Jesus as the risen Son of God.
In our text from today John, the writer of the gospel text, says this about these evil influences:
Little children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
5 They are from the world; therefore what they say is from the world, and the world listens to them.
6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us, and whoever is not from God does not listen to us.
From this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
This world can really suck at times—that is true, but it is not the end of God’s story manifest in this living narrative.
If you are from God, if he is living within your heart, if you have accepted Jesus, you have already conquered these evil spirits “for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
The media continues to spew it’s negative agenda because (verse 5) “what they say is from the world and the world listens to them.”
Experiencing the Gospel
Now, I have excellent news for each of you.
A news that defies anything the world will tell you.
The media of this culture will never acknowledge it because it is a message not from this world: GOD LOVES YOU! John affirms this about God who has conquered the world in verse 10:
In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
11 Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.
12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world.
15 God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God.
16 So we have known and believe the love that God has for us.
God loves us.
I know many of you understand this, but it bears repeating.
God loves us.
In the midst of the harsh reality of life, God sent His Son to die for us.
Even when we did not love Him, God made a way for us to be saved.
Verse 15 says, “God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God and they abide in God.
So we have known and believe the love that God has for us.”
Do you know the love of God?
Is it manifest in your life?
If not, and you would like to know about this God of love, I am available and Sergio is available to talk.
Anticipating the Consequences
God loves us, but this, again, is not the end of the story.
John says in verse 12 that “no one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.”
How do people know that God loves us?
One way is by our actions.
By the things we say.
By the way we love all people.
I have to be honest.
I’ve witnessed the way some of you act toward one another.
They are actions of the world and not of true Christ-followers.
How can you say you understand God’s love when you can’t love the person sitting beside you.
When you can’t even be nice to a person sitting in this group.
God loves you, but he expects you to show that same love to others.
Because God loves you, I love each and every one of you.
I may not like every one of your actions at times, but I love you.
Despite the things we say and do God came to earth and died to save each of us.
We all say and do things that don’t honor God, but we have to get better, each and every day, at loving every person that cross our path.
It is the only way the world will know the love of God; by the way we love them.
This world honors suicide.
The kingdom of God honors life and love.
Death is easy.
Living in love is hard.
This world wants it all to be about you (self-god).
The Kingdom of God gives due worship to the One True God.
This world honors suicide.
The kingdom of God honors life.
Honors love.
Death is easy.
Living and loving is hard.
This world wants it all to be about us (self-god).
The Kingdom of God gives due worship to the One True God.
So, don’t live like people who aren’t loved because God loves you.
You have people surrounding you that love you.
And don’t live without making sure you tell people that they are loved and that you love them.
The way to break the pattern of suicide and drugs and fear and hatred and violence is to let people know that there is a better way through the love of Jesus Christ.
God’s love has already conquered the things of this earth.
There is nothing you will face that God hasn’t already claimed victory over.
Take heart and live in His love.
