Our Posture Toward Scripture
Abraham
An Example of Faith
God desires us to grow in maturity.
Tensions between past promises and a command to nullify those promises.
Hebrews 11
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.
He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”
Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.
Does Abraham desire God?
Does he trust God?
Or is he now devoted to God’s blessings or the promises over God himself?
Designed to Live With & For God
We are not designed to live for anything other than God.
Prone to selfishness
For whoever will find their life will lose, it, but who ever offers it up for my sake will gain it.
God
God will Provide
God is to be Feared
God desires for us to mature in accordance with our design.
The Beating of the bounds
The Beating of the bounds
When maps were rare it was usual to walk the parish boundaries on Ascension Day or during Harvest time.
Knowledge of the limits of each parish needed to be handed down so that such matters as liability to contribute to the repair of the church, and the right to be buried within the churchyard were not disputed.
The priest of the parish with the churchwardens and the parochial officials headed a crowd of boys who, armed with green boughs, usually birch or willow, beat the parish boundary markers with them.
Sometimes the boys were themselves whipped or even violently bumped on the boundary-stones to make them remember.
The object of taking boys along is supposed to ensure that witnesses to the boundaries should survive as long as possible.
Isaac
How to traumatize your son in 1 easy step.
What if God was not only testing Abraham, but cementing a truth in Isaac’s mind at the same time.
Dad said, God will provide - He did
God saved me!
And here the promise is carried on through Isaac
You & Me?
The man and the boulder.
We need to learn to walk before we can run.
Holy Indifference - I desire and chose to be in the centre of God’s will for my life.
A Humble Posture
When we stop presuming to be king or queen in our lives, and relinquish our self-appointed place as judge we can be open to blessing even in difficult times.
When we ask God what are you trying to show me here?
Rather than,
Reject the scandal; Receive the lessons in maturity
