What does it mean to be a man? Look around. What's so desperately needed where we live, in our church, country and in our world, are men who embrace all that God created them to be. To get there we need to dig deep into the doctrine of manhood.

Momentum: Moving Into Biblical Manhood

INTRO: (Me)
I’m I a man? I struggle with that question.
I’m amazed at the responses I got. Ill: Guy wanting to fight - realized his fight wasn’t with me but God.
Manhood is not about my caricature it’s about my character.
(We) We live in a culture that has lost its definition of manhood, leaving generations of men and men-to-be confused about their roles, responsibilities, relationships, and the reason God made them men.
Historically, we have many problems to cause us to be stuck today. Slavery and the injustices of separating families. When boys are ripped out of the arms of their fathers and treated as communities it is going to cause future problems. In industrial revolution the American Dream was born. The lunch box and the lazy boy were invented and dad left kids with mom and went to work. Raising children became the “women’s work” and dad’s best times became work time not family time.
We don’t need to settle into something far less than God intended. We are stuck in a “no-man’s-land” and the solution for every problem in our society is a movement of men that moves with Jesus. Let’s create some moMentum.
(God) In this series, we are not interested in being politically correct or even traditionally correct. During this series our goal is to be biblically correct.
MoMENtum will not happen unless I move WITH Jesus.
Genesis 2:7 ESV
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
formed the man
Gensis
In the very first book of the bible we see God’s design for manhood. His glory spills out into the universe and He loving spoke the world as we know it. God fashioned and formed man. He created him out of the dust and blew life into his lungs.
Genesis 2:18 ESV
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
helper fit for him
Genesis 3:17 ESV
17 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life;
You shall not eat of it
They did. This is where manhood got stuck.
Genesis 3:21 ESV
21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
Genesis
Genesis 3:20 ESV
20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
God made for
This is a foreshadowing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Your sin will be covered. I’m going to do for you what you couldn’t do for yourselves. The blood of an animal will be shed and I will take the skin of that animal and cover you.
Romans 5:17 ESV
17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Romans
righteousness reign in life
MoMENtum will not happen unless I move with Jesus.
The question is, do I have what it takes? NO No man has what it takes! Not one!!When you get to that position you can then get up and move like a man. When you stand and face God after He has breathed His breath in you then and only then can you move like the man He created you to be. This is good new because with Jesus you are enough.
Don’t move AWAY from Jesus = rebellion
Don’t move FOR Jesus = religion
Move WITH Jesus = relationship
1 Corinthians 16:
1 Corinthians 16:13–14 ESV
13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love.
act like men = is the crankshaft
4 necessities = tires
To gain momentum we need traction. What drive that traction in the engine/crankshaft. God is the designer, dive and the driver. Our attitudes, affections, activities and ambitions are the tires that God want’s to work through to create and sustain a movement of biblical manhood.
Ill: Drag car (You Tube Video 38 sec - 1:23 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9L3bllEbm4 ) - unless the tires are driven by the engine the car just sits there and get’s loud and blows a lot of smoke.
Be watchful
How To Be A Watchful Man
Arg: Awesome! I’m good at watching, ESPN, The Outdoor Channel, Football Games. I can be watchful.
Historically, every town had watchmen. They would watch for foreign enemies and thieves. This is the picture this passage paints. That as a man you are going to be very mindful and watch out of the enemy. Satan.
His purpose statement is giving to us.
John 10:10 ESV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
His native tongue is lies and his occupation is thief. Every path of rebellion and religion that gets you away from a relationship with God ends with you being devoured.
Peter writes in the book of 1 Peter some answers to this watchful question.
1 Peter 5:6–11 ESV
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter
devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Ill: African Safari - lioness… I heard a middle school girl scream.
Transition: Four tactics of our enemy that we need to watch out for daily.
1. Pride
1 Peter 5:6 ESV
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
Humble yourselves
Ex: The opposite of humility is pride. Humility is a deep dependence. Pride is independence. The natural caricature of a man is to be a self made man.
Save Me & Show Me
I Need You
How Can I Help You?
Humility is not a feeling it is a position our inward attitude. The language of humilty - i’m sorry, I apologize, you are right...
As a man your options are to be humble now or to be humbled later. every knee will bow
under the mighty hand of God
Realize that without his hand you wouldn’t be alive. Stay under that mighty hand!
Worship is a key way to humble yourself. We are not doing Christian karaoke. The words of the songs we sing magnify God and devalue our righteous.
We lift our hand in surrender.
so that
He will exalt you. The seeds of a humble life will produce a fruit of righteousness. Humility is not a means to an end. Humility is the end. A humble man is a portrait of biblical manhood.
2. Worry
1 Peter 5:7 ESV
7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:
casting
Two big worries. Our work & our wife. We have a desire to work but the enemy can twist it into an idol. We want to be vulnerable to our wife but we worry about insecurity.
Work
Wife
Worry is all about control. Controlling the situation. Is your faith in your situation or your Savior. Is Jesus enough?
Ill: Casting - fishing rod. We through it but reel it back in. Cut the line or it will pull you under.
“If you pray about it don't worry about it. If you're going to worry about it don't pray about it.” - Steve Harvey
3. Comfort
1 Peter 5:8 ESV
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 peter 5:
1 Peter 5:8 ESV

Who does the lion attack?
Get in the middle!!
Conclusion:
50:45
1 Peter 5:9–10 ESV
9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
1 Peter 5:9-
grace
restore
confirm
strengthen
establish
Next Move: Men if you are willing to act like a man. If you would say I can’t do this. I can’t move with Jesus by myself. I need Him. Would you stand?
Ladies, would you stand with your man? Will you let him know that with Jesus he is enough. I’m asking you to be God’s echo has Satan is in one ear telling him he is not enough. Be God’s echo in the other ear letting him know he has what it takes!
You want momentum in Brevard? It doesn’t need more churches, more education it needs men to stop being passive and abusive and come under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Series Truth!
Hall of Fame football coach John Madden once said, “All a prevent defense does is prevent you from winning.” If you attempt to just play defense against the devil, you will lose. An inferior team against a superior team must have and execute a superior strategy. For the Christian, that superior strategy against the devil is an offense of humbly turning to God, taking the initiative to notice Satan’s points of attack, and resisting him when he comes. Indeed, the best defense against our enemy the devil is a strong offense of standing firm in our faith.
