I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS
()
In the early 70’s, two British men named Pete Ham and Tom Evans put their brains together to write a song that people recognize instantly even today.
Initially, Ham wrote the entire song but Evans didn’t like the chorus.
Later, Evans would write the intense and dramatic words to the chorus that made this song a classic:
I can't live
If living is without you
I can't live
I can't give anymore
I can't live
If living is without you
I can't give
I can't give anymore
God did not create us to function well apart from other people.
And he did not create us to function well without him.
We need God.
We need to know that he is with us and will help us no matter what life on this earth might throw at us.
After Jesus was raised from the dead, he gathered his followers together for his final words before he would leave planet Earth and ascend to his Father in heaven.
-----17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Amen.
Jesus promised his people then and us today that he would always be with them.
And this morning, I would like to give you three reasons why we need this promise, why we need to know that Jesus will be always be with us:
1.
Because it is easy for us to have doubts and fears
17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
In the book of Genesis, God appeared to Jacob in a dream and stood beside him and told him:
-----15 “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”
Now notice verse 17:
17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place!
This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
Did you see the similarities?
Fear/Doubting but… God’s promise to be with his people.

We need to know that Jesus will be always be with us:
1.
Because it is easy for us to have doubts and fears
2. Because he has given us a mission to fulfill
says: “Make disciples of all nations…baptizing them…teaching them…”
There is no way that we will be able to do this unless we remember that Jesus says:
“…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Jeremiah was called by God when he was young to be a “prophet to the nations”---but he was scared to death:
(NLT)-----6 “O Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I can’t speak for you!
I’m too young!”
What was God’s response?
-----7 The Lord replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you.
8 And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and will protect you.
I, the Lord, have spoken!”
As we share the good news and make followers of Jesus, our confidence is this: “I am with you always, even until the end of the age.”
We need to know that Jesus will be always be with us:
1.
Because it is easy for us to have doubts and fears
2. Because he has given us a mission to fulfill
3.
Because it will keep us going when we feel like quitting
In the OT, the nation of Israel refused to be a light to the nations, and God judged them and made them live 500 miles away in Babylon for 70 years.
But when God allowed them to return to Israel, they came back to a city and temple that was destroyed.
They rebuilt their homes, but not God’s home.
And God said to them:
-----4 But now the Lord says: Be strong, Zerubbabel.
Be strong, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest.
Be strong, all you people still left in the land.
And now get to work, for I am with you, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
In the same way that God wanted his OT saints to build for him, he wants us, his NT saints, to build for him.
Mathew wrote his gospel about 15-30 years or so after Jesus’ death to remind God’s people of the commission Jesus had given a few decades earlier!
Go…make disciples…baptize…teach… WHY?
I am with you always, even until the end of the age.
Martin Luther, who started the Protestant reformation 500 years ago this year, was having one of the absolutely worst years of his life.
He was sick, depressed, had a house full of diseased people, and didn’t think he would make it.
But he remembered that he had God’s word and his promises.
And after one of the worst times he had ever endured, wrote the song: “A mighty fortress is our God.”
Did we in our own strength confide,
Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
The Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth His Name,
From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
And folks, even though…
…we are prone to doubts and fears, and even though
…we have difficult mission to the nations to fulfill, and even though
…we get weary like Luther and feel like quitting…
we will remember,
---just like Jacob did, and
---just like Jeremiah did, and
---just Haggai did, and
---just like Martin Luther did…
we will remember that our mighty fortress, the Lord Jesus Christ has promised us:
“I am with you always, even until the end of the age.”
