Definition

Control of the mind and emotions.

Proverbs 25:28; Proverbs 16:32; 1 Corinthians 7:9

Proverbs 25:28 HCSB
A man who does not control his temper is like a city whose wall is broken down.
Proverbs 16:32 HCSB
Patience is better than power, and controlling one’s temper, than capturing a city.
1 Corinthians 7:9 HCSB
But if they do not have self-control, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with desire.

Self-control is about the use of personal power.

Living in control leads to blessing.

Joseph

Genesis 43:31

Genesis 43:31 NKJV
Then he washed his face and came out; and he restrained himself, and said, “Serve the bread.”
Joseph lived his entire adult life under the worst imaginable circumstances. However, he lived a life of self-control and saved his people and world at the time.

Christ

Christ lived in control His entire life. Yet He never demonstrated His self-control more strongly than during His passion and crucifixion.

Lack of Control

Galatians 5:13, 19–21

Galatians 5:13 HCSB
For you were called to be free, brothers; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.
Galatians 5:19–21 HCSB
Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I tell you about these things in advance—as I told you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Saul

1 Samuel 13:12

1 Samuel 13:12 HCSB
I thought: The Philistines will now descend on me at Gilgal, and I haven’t sought the Lord’s favor. So I forced myself to offer the burnt offering.”
Saul gave in to his fear and desire for personal power.

Source of Self-control

Fruit of the Spirit.

2 Timothy 1:7

2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Philippians 2:13

Philippians 2:13 NKJV
for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Are you in control of yourself?
How would your life be different with self-control?
On whom will you rely to enable your self-control?
