EPHESIANS 6:4
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
AIM
To teach fathers the importance of giving our children a strong foundation and teaching them many fundamental principles from the Word of God.
INTRODUCTION
Our world is in desperate need of Christian fathers who are committed to preparing their children for life. I am convinced many problems in our world could be solved by having a good Christian father in the home who will prepare their children for the real world and give them proper instruction in God’s Holy Word.
A CHRISTIAN FATHER IS A GOOD PROVIDER
A Christian father will provide for the needs in his home, such as food, shelter and clothing.
8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
1 Timothy 5:
Being a good provider for a family does not include anything and everything a child wants. There is nothing wrong with telling our children no to things that are not considered to be a necessity for living. A wise father will also expect his children to earn some of the things they want. In the real world, we rarely, almost never, get everything we want. There is nothing wrong with teaching our children the value of money and helping them learn to work hard for things they want.
7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.
7 Prescribe these things as well, so that they may be above reproach. 8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Christian discipline is needed to prevent children from growing up without reverence for God, respect for parental authority, knowledge of Christian standards, and habits of self-control.
The Lord should always be first in our lives and the most honored member in our homes. The foundations of our homes must be built upon the fundamental principles from God’s Word when Jesus is Lord. Our homes must be filled with love and respect for God and family.

Fathers should teach their children and the children should listen, learn and apply the things they learn.
1 Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention that you may gain understanding, 2 For I give you sound teaching; Do not abandon my instruction. 3 When I was a son to my father, Tender and the only son in the sight of my mother, 4 Then he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments and live; 5 Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth. 6 “Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; Love her, and she will watch over you.
The things children learn in the home should lay a solid foundation for them to build upon for the remainder of your lives. A good foundation will make the difference between success and failure.

Children show wisdom when they accept Biblical principles taught by their fathers. Foolish children reject the disciple their fathers.

A CHRISTIAN FATHER IS A GOOD PROTECTOR
Children need built in protection, especially in today’s world. There are all kinds of dangers our children will face throughout their lifetime. We need to instill good values in our children and prepare them so they will know how to respond when faced with the evil and dangers of our society.
Perhaps one of the greatest dangers in our society is the illegal use of drugs. They have always been dangerous, but some of the drugs being taken today could lead to some serious physical problems and death.
My memory takes me back to a time when I served as a volunteer chaplain for a local hospital in Somerset, KY. A social worker asked me to visit a young man who had overdosed on drugs and had a very close brush with death. I am not sure about the age of the young man, but I am going to guess somewhere between sixteen and twenty years old. When I entered the room, he was sitting in the middle of the bed. It was pretty obvious from his appearance and actions that he did some serious damage to his brain. I would have compared with a seven to nine year old child. The other thing I remember was his father leading him to reject Jesus after sharing the gospel with him. They thought of Jesus as no more than a good man.
Fathers should take time to teach children about sex, including same sex predators. It seems each new generation experiments with sex at a younger age. Learning about sex is not the question. The question is, how do you want your children to learn about sex. They can learn about sex at home or they can learn about sex from their classmates. Too many parents have told me they are not comfortable talking with their children about sex in the home. This is never a good excuse to ignore the subject. The people our children will be associated with are going to be extremely comfortable talking with our young ones about sex. Unfortunately, this kind of teaching will the wrong way for them to learn. Man up and prepare them for these encounters.
Movies and music are two additional things about which we need to talk with our children. I am convinced much of the violence in our society is due to the movies children have been allowed to watch over the past several years. Music has also contributed to many evils in our society. Perhaps we should take time to read the lyrics our children are hearing. I am doubtful most of us would allow our children to listen to some of today’s music if we could read the lyrics of the song.
One of the greatest ways we can protect our children is to teach them to read the Bible and pray. Concerning prayer and Bible study, Charles Stanley wrote, “Because of pressing needs and full schedules, parents sometimes neglect teaching important spiritual lessons. It can be tempting to assume that the children will learn in Sunday school to pray and read the Bible. But the truth is, God has given parents the job of training their sons and daughters in spiritual matters.”
A Christian father is a good protector in his home.
CONCLUSION
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Twelve: Living the Lordship of Christ (Ephesians 6:1–9)
Home is the place where the children ought to learn about the Lord and the Christian life. It is time that Christian parents stop “passing the buck” to Sunday School teachers and Christian day-school teachers, and start nurturing their children.
The only way a man can be a Christian father is by knowing Jesus as His Savior. Do you know Jesus as your Savior? Are you a good provider for your home? Do you have good principles which are based upon the Word of Almighty God? Are you a good protector for your home? Today is the best day to make some changes in your life and be the kind of Christian father who honors God and the Christian father your children needs.
