vss.1-2:

Difficult to suggest that So-and-So has the right to first refusal or an obligation to buy…

The meaning: Naomi is about to sell land.

Boaz presents to So-and-So a ‘double financial burden’. “But in doing this he must have had some law or custom behind him, for the kinsman raised no objection.”

NIV: OR, he just doesn’t want to deal with the complexity of it all.

Land is important because it always ought to stay in the family line. If a man even sells his land, he has the right to buy it back when he has enough money. : “For the land is mind’ for ye are strangers and sojourners with me...” “A family’s right to its own land was inalienable.” Morris

“The audience is supposed to think, ‘Aha!’ What a clever (and unexpected) solution to both widows’ problems!” Cundall and Morris

Judges and Ruth: An Introduction and Commentary d. Boaz Redeems Ruth the Moabitess (4:1–12)

If this is so then Boaz is saying that Ruth also has a stake in this field, and since she is the widow of a childless kinsman this involves marrying her to raise up a child for the deceased as well as treating it as a property matter.

Things get complicated: If Boaz has a child with Ruth, than that first child would have the rights to the land, but it’s already owned by So-and-So, and he doesn’t want to deal with all that mess!

Redemptive mess: marriage?? How can someone like Ruth serve as someone God uses for our redemption?

Vs. 5: I’ll redeem the land. No problem.

Part II: Boaz reveals the girl!

vs. 6: ESVSB: “Apparently he was concerned that any son born to him and Ruth would share the inheritance already planned for his present children.”

Things get complicated: If Boaz has a child with Ruth, than that first child would have the rights to the land, but it’s already owned by So-and-So, and he doesn’t want to deal with all that mess!

He CANNOT redeem rather than I will not.

Son will inherit the land, not him! “It would mar his inheritance.”

vs. 11: ESV: May you act worthily: Same word for Boaz and same word Boaz uses for Ruth.
