Introduction
Happy Father’s Day
We had been working through the Gospel John of John
Stand if you are able
John 5:25-32
John 5:2
John 5:25–32 NASB95
“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. “If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. “There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
Let’s Pray
John 5:25
John 5:25
John 5:25 NASB95
“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
Are you listening?
Those who hear will live.
Life is busy.
We have so many distractions.
Work, School, Social Media, TV, Radio, Internet, Advertisements
In an article written for Time Magazine author Kevin McSpadden said the following:
We are barmbo
Time Magazine: http://time.com/3858309/attention-spans-goldfish/
“The average attention span for the notoriously ill-focused goldfish is nine seconds, but according to a new study from Microsoft Corp., people now generally lose concentration after eight seconds, highlighting the affects of an increasingly digitalized lifestyle on the brain.” - Kevin McSpadden
How can we listen when we only focus for 8 seconds?
How can we hear the voice of the Son of God when we are only paying attention for 8 seconds?
Some people call this the squirrel effect - Look squirrel!
Jesus has a lot to say about himself in the next few verses.
John 5:26-27
John 5:26–27 NASB95
“For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.
John 5:26-
Three truths about Jesus
Three Truths About Jesus
The Son has life in Him
Jesus has the authority to execute judgment
3. He is the Son of Man
These three truths all came from the Father.
As we recognize Father’s Day today - we see three truths about Jesus that are from the Father.
The Son has life in Him - eternal life!
I say this weekly - Jesus is the way of Life - eternal life is found in Jesus
But do we believe this?
Are we comfortable with the lost, being lost?
Are we comfortable with the damned, being damned?
How many friends and family will spend eternity with God, versus spend eternity in hell?
Jesus has the authority to execute judgment
Who better to judge than Jesus
God who left the comforts of heaven to live the human life
The God-man who walked amongst us
He is the Son of Man
The savior of the world
Three truths that were given by the Father
John 5:28 NASB95
“Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
Compare this verse with verse 25
versus 5:28
John 5:25 NASB95
“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
Verse 25 says that “an hour is coming and is now” - versus “Do not marvel; for an hour is coming”
We are talking about two different times.
Verse 25 an hour is coming and now is.
Verse 28 an hour is coming
Verse 25 talks about the present
While verse 28 talks about a time to come
John 5:29
John 5:29 NASB95
and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
Two Resurrections
The Resurrection of Life
The Resurrection of Judgment
These resurrections are all about deeds - do you see that?
Good deeds - a resurrection of life.
Evil deeds - a resurrection of judgment
But let’s keep going
We will never be good enough to compare ourselves to a holy God
John 5:30–32 NASB95
“I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. “If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. “There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
John 5:30 NASB95
“I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Jesus is the only way to heaven, He is the way, the truth, and the life.
Conclusion
Jesus was all about the Father
Next week we are going to look at the witness who testify for Jesus
He seeked His Father’s will
John the Baptist
I love this last part - 31&32
John 5:31–32 NASB95
“If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. “There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
The Works of Jesus
The Witness of the Father
The Witness of Scripture
I was thinking about this Father’s Day - I watched my Dad read his Bible everyday.
He would read a Bible that had multiple translations side by side
He testified to me HIs belief in Jesus
Next week we will see the testimony of John the Baptist, the works of Jesus, the witness of the Father, and the witness of scripture.
