The inscription of psalm 18

God gave David absolute victory over his enemies and Saul. David thanked God.

1. God is worthy of our Delight

David made these declarations:
His complete love
His total dependence
His loyal devotion

(#1) “I love you, Lord.”

Love = Covenantal Love, Tender Love, Intimate Love, Faithful Love, Deep Love.
Slide up real close to God, and hug him forever!
Parents-Children / Lovers / Husband-wife / reaching out and hug and hold them.
Mary Magdalene encountering the risen Christ.
John 20:17 NIV
Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”

(#2) “I love you, Lord, MY STRENGTH.”

I LEAN ON MY LORD = MY STRENGTH.
“My” = Personal Possessive Pronoun.
(9 Times in Verses 1-2)
First pronoun learned by most children.
“my toy, my house, my mom...”

David’s childlike dependence:

Simple faith
Simple trust
Simple way
Total dependence
Every ounce of his strength from God

David’s life is:

To live for the Lord
To love the Lord
To lean on the Lord for everything.
Such love should be ours
2.

2. God is worthy of our Dependence

Psalm 18:2 NIV
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

(#1) David praised for a PERSONAL GOD

He used “MY” again and again.
Most important: Right Relationship with God.
Saved by Grace > religious >church >baptized...
Absolute faith for salvation
Nothing else will work
Ephesians 2:8–9 NIV
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

(#2) David praised for a POWERFUL GOD.

(1) God is our Stability: my Rock.

The world is spinning out of control.
But God is the Rock. Live above trials and turmoils.
Right Relationship with God gives us safety, right perspective, confidence. See the world through His eyes.

(2) God is our Safety: “My fortress”.

Lofty mountain citadels.
Running from Saul.
Place of safety
Place of perfect peace

(3) God is our Saviour: “My deliverer”

God is the One who saves, rescues, delivers us from dangers, difficulties, trials and temptation.
A word of glory: ultimately saved when we arrive home in heaven.
1 John 1:7 NIV
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
Psalm 107:2 KJV 1900
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, Whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;

(4) God is in control: “My God”. Sovereignty.

Totally in control.
Guiding us from His throne.
Isaiah
Romans 8:28 NIV
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

(5) God is our Strength: “My refuge”.

A cliff, an unmovable rock.
Everything else is tossed and twisted.
But God is my refuge. My anchor of life.
Unmovable, lofty rock.
1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

(6) God is our Shield: protection.

The cross is the shield between the wrath of God and sinners.

(7) God is our Security: “My Horn of Salvation.”

Symbol of strength & conquest
symbol of absolute security.
Salvation is totally secured.
1 Peter 1:5 KJV 1900
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
It also reminds us of the Horn of cornucopia = horn of plenty.
Symbol of overflowing abundance.
Salvation is so much richer than you can ever imagine.

(8) God is our Supply: “My High Tower (or stronghold)”

Soldiers look down the attackers from high towers.
Shoot arrows down on their heads.
Stocked with ammunition and weapon supply for spiritual battle.
A place of spiritual refreshment & rest. “The Battle is the Lord’s” ()

Not only God is worthy of our delight.

Not only God is worthy of our dependence.

3. God is also worthy of our Devotion!

David made a pledge:

To call on God.
To trust Him and Him alone for all victories of life.
To praise God for His greatness, power, faithfulness, protection, provision, and perpetual victories.

What God could do for us yesterday, He will do for us tomorrow!

Isaiah 45:7 KJV 1900
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
Let us Walk by Faith, not by sight.
God is worthy to be worshiped, honoured, praised and trusted forever and ever!
