Solomon’s reign has been hard for the common people. He has taken them from their homes to staff his luxurious palace. He has taken them from their farms and vineyards to work like slaves on his building projects. The elders now counsel Rehoboam to lighten his people’s burdens.
But Rehoboam doesn’t listen to the advice of the elders. Instead he takes the advice of friends his own age. They say he should increase his people’s burden and sharpen their suffering; and this is what he decides to do.
But the people have a champion in Jeroboam. Jeroboam is a leader of the tribe of Ephraim. He was seen as a rival by Solomon and has been hiding in Egypt. Now he returns to challenge Rehoboam.
