The Book Of Galatians

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

The History of this epistle to the churches in Galatia (give the name of the title in greek to english) Churches in Galatia. This is the first epistle that Paul is addressing to multiple churches in one region.

Paul visited several cities in the region of Galatia during his missionary journeys. While the number of churches Paul addresses in Galatians is unknown, the letter suggests they were predominantly Gentiles—that is, non-Jews (, ; ; ). The exact location of Galatia remains uncertain. It might refer to the territory in north-central Asia Minor inhabited by the Gauls beginning in the third century bc, or the southern area of Asia Minor that Paul visited during his first missionary journey.

They only asked us to remember the poor—the very thing I also was eager to do.

Paul starts off right off the bat, with his declaration of who he is. He is an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. He states he recieved this apostleship and responsibility not from men, but through revelation of Jesus Christ.

He states that His gospel was recieved through revelation from Christ himself. For three years Paul was in a desert receiving the teaching of Christ, just like the original Apostles.

He starts this epistle like this for a reason, He is getting in position in the minds of the Galatians to see that he speaks on divine authority and not his own. He holds the magnitude of the responsibility to preach the gospel given to him from Christ himself.

Now he shifts and Asks the Galatians after the declaration of his true gospel that he is shocked that they have left the original teaching from Paul to a new gospel and different one. _ One that involves the works and jealousy, strife, and self works to become Justified

In different epistles and the book of Acts, Paul warns the churches he has been with while crying that wolves are going to come in. These wolves are going to try and pervert the gospel you originally recieved. These wolves are going to disturb you. Some are Judaizers, in this context thats exactly who they are. For other churches like the one Timothy was Pastoring in Ephesus, they were people who were

For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all, just as Jannes’s and Jambres’s folly was also. Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance, persecutions, and sufferings, such as happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium and at Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and out of them all the Lord rescued me! You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 4 NASB95

I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 2 timothy 4

The false teachers in Galatia probably presented their message as the true understanding of the gospel. According to Paul, these teachers have done more harm than good. All of Paul’s descriptions of them are negative (vv. 7; 5:10, 12). The identity of these teachers is unknown, and their affiliation with the leaders of the church at Jerusalem remains uncertain. They probably are Judaizers

Christian Jews who, during the apostolic and early postapostolic periods, attempted to impose the Jewish way of life on gentile Christians. The Greek verb, which literally means “to Judaize,” is found only one time in the NT (), where it actually means “to live according to Jewish customs and traditions.”

So Paul tells in Chapter one How he was with Cephas or Peter the Apostle for 15 days or a little over two weeks. While he was with him he was not rebuked, or corrected with his message of the Gospel. So these Judaizers that are imposing their jewish customs on the Galatian churches are now having the light shed on them for who they are. Deceitful workers. Tares and false brethren. The Apostle Peter and then James both agreed with his Gospel through no rebuke of it. These were Jewish believers and pillars of reputation in the Church. They had nothing bad to say of Pauls gospel.

Paul went back to his missionary journey and in the fourteen year of ministry there arose a problem with the gentile church and the judaizers saying the gentiles need to observe the law of Moses and be circumcised. This is the beginning of a great debate to the point Barnabas and Saul travelled back to Jerusalem for this issue to be handled.

Turn to Acts Chapter 15

So the counsel ruled that they were to abstain from foods with blood and fornication and things contaminated by idols.

The only addition to the Apostles mission to the Gentiles was to remember the Poor

thing I was also eager to do Expresses Paul’s shared desire to contribute to the poor in the Jerusalem church. Paul frequently mentions in his letters his effort to raise funds among the Gentiles to support the poor Jewish believers in Jerusalem (; ; ). Paul also knew that remembering the poor represented a further opportunity to unite Gentile and Jewish believers ().

Now there is also key event that Paul addressed to the Galatian church that happened with him in Antioch.

Peter was operating in hypocrisy because he ate with Gentiles until James and John traveled in from Judea. The jewish believers followed suit and began to separate themselves to the point that Barnabas was also influenced to do it. Barnabas was Pauls right hand man and a fellow Apostle to the Gentiles. So Paul rebuked him in the middle of everybody there! He called Peter out on the carpet. _This solidified that Pauls Gospel is not according to the works of the Law but through faith.

Now we get to the justification through the faith or confidence and expectation of Jesus redemption.

2:11–14 Paul’s accusers likely claimed that he altered the gospel message to develop a version that would appeal to non-Jewish people (Gentiles). To counteract this view, Paul uses this section to argue that he defended the truth of the gospel when Peter failed to uphold its message. Paul strategically presents an exchange he had with Peter to address both the agitators and the Galatians. In allowing the Galatians to eavesdrop on his rebuke of Peter—a leader of greater rank than either the agitators or the Galatians—Paul shows that the relationship between Gentile believers and the law has been dealt with before.

Paul Goes on to explain and rebuke the Galatian church because of they turned from the Gospel. They turned from what they were originally taught. That is through Christ who was crucified publically for you that you are justified. Not The Law! That it is through Christ that we have the Holy Spirit to work miracles amongst us through faith and not the actions of rituals through the law. It is through Christ that you recieved the Holy Spirit through the hearing of Faith!

Paul lays out the example of Abraham and weaves the narrative of Abrahams life into the promise God gave him that through his seed (Jesus) the entire world would be blessed. Abraham was before the law of Moses and so the law being introduced in the middle of the salvation plan does not remove the faith needed to be Justified. (Saved.)

Ok now that we have gone through the text now we can properly interpret the passage I want to read about walking in the Spirit and not the flesh.

“How do you abstain from carrying out the actions of the flesh, by walking in the spirit. “ You have to walk in the spirit of God. To walk in the spirit means to allow Christ life to be lived in and through you. “The life I now live I live for the son of God who made himself manifest.” Paul said in verse 4 of this chapter you have fallen from grace if you walk in the law, which is in the works of the flesh. - Theme

It is my hope that each and every one of you will walk in the Spirit of God. It is my hope that each of the people of Christian Life Center hear the Gospel and are not removed from the faith into a religious works based fleshly life. I pray that you would ask God to continue to lead you and guide you by the Holy Spirit to do the greatest identifying characteristic of christian disciple. That is to Love. To Love one another, and then we fulfil the entire law of Christ and are in freedom through Christ.
