Things We Fear

Pain

Physical pain, emotional pain.

Judgment

From other people.
What we wear or drive
how we talk
how much money our parents make
From God.
For thinking what we think
doing what we do
saying what we say

Anxiety

Anatomy of a panic attack.
Your heart starts pounding like you’ve just run a marathon
You try to breath, but it feels like someone is standing on your chest.
Your palms begin to sweat, and you get a tingling sensation in your limbs
You feel like you’re dying, or you’re going crazy.
Is it wrong to fear pain? Judgment? Anxiety? Why or why not?
What does it look like to NOT fear pain? Judgment? Anxiety? Is this a good alternative?

Do Not Fear

Where Fear Leads

Jedi Code
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.
Yoda
Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.
Fear of pain often leads to isolation.
Fear of judgment often leads to callousness.
Ironically, anxiety only breeds more anxiety.
Why does living in fear often lead to misery? Isn’t fear practical, after all?
If fear leads to negative things, why don’t we just stop being afraid?

Where Fear Leads

Biblical Case For Not Fearing

John 14:27 ESV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
john
1 John 4:18 ESV
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
2 tim
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Luke 12:22–26 ESV
And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?
luke 12

Where Fear Leads

Read again. Does Paul mean that the opposite of “fear” is “power and love and self-control?” Is he right? Why or why not?
If Scripture is so keen on us putting fear away, why does did God give us the ability of fear in the first place?
