Evangelism is something very hard
It’s something that is not one of our favorite things to do
It’s scary
What if they ask me something I don’t know
What if I get something wrong
What if they make fun of me
What if I say something stupid
What if they don’t want to listen to me
What if they reject God because of something I say
Don’t let satan lead you into this lie—if God brings someone into your path and you feel the SPirit leading you to witness to them He will help you!
It’s hard
You have to know what you believe to be able to tell someone else what you believe—That requires a lot of thought and study!
It’s hard to talk to people you don’t know…especially if you’re going to talk about something as explosive as religion.
It’s time consuming
To be able to witness to someone you must actually know people who are unsaved. This means forgetting some of the comforts you have for yourself and getting into the world.
It takes a lot of time to research things you know and how to witness
You need to develop a plan so as to witness more effectively
Before we get into that, what is the spiritual basis for witnessing?

God’s command for us to witness
We see this command and helps to fulfill this command

This authority is the right to use power
The entire Gospel of Matthew is stressing the authority of Christ and how He is God incarnate
There were different kinds of authority He was given
Authority to His teaching ()
Authority in healing ()
Authority in forgiving sins ()
He had authority over Satan and he delegated that authority to the apostles ()
Since Jesus has all authority and conquered sin and death, we can trust that He will lead us in the right way no matter the circumstances, trials, or fears—He is in control!
Although God has all authority, he has given us the responsibility of having a mission faith.
God will not leave us alone, though. We must be willing to trust His authority and power as we go out into the world and win people for His name
Example:
Church in the book of acts. They depended on Christ and His power in a lost world. They did not depend on their own authority and scholars or their own talents, but rather depended on Jesus’ authority delegated to man.
We see the authority in v.18, but now we see the activity in vv. 19-20a

Although the word is translated “go” in our Bibles, it is a present participle that really means continuous going
This is where we see the only command in the GC—Make disciples
What is a disciple?
Most popular name for early believers
Being a disciple was more than a convert or church member—more like an apprentice
A disciple attached himself to a teacher, identified with him, learned from him, and lived with him

A disciple, then, is one who has believed on Jesus Christ and expressed this faith by being baptized. He remains in the fellowship of the believers that he might be taught the truths of the faith (Acts 2:41–47). He is then able to go out and win others and teach them. This was the pattern of the New Testament church
How does this differ from what happens now?
It seems to me the modern church likes to outsource their evangelism for different reasons mentioned earlier.
God commands all of us to evangelize
not just pastors
not just teachers
not just adults
not just “smart” people
If you are a Christian, you can disciple people. You don’t need to go to seminary to do that!
How do we make disciples?
Look to the example of Jesus and His disciples
Jesus shared the good news with them
He continually imparted knowledge to them so they would grow
He never left them to their own devices until they were ready. And even then He gave them the Holy Spirit which was better for them.
All this to say, discipleship is time and presence intensive. It is more than just sharing the gospel with someone. It is trying to water those seeds so as to get fruit
It is giving them tools and tricks to live a better Christian life
Teach them the word of God

God promised to be with us
If Jesus would have stayed on earth He wouldn’t have been able to keep this promise because He was still constrained to His human body. But He said we get a more profitable gift with the Holy Spirit.
He will guide you as you witness
He will give you wisdom
He will give you courage
Trust in him
As long as you are trusting Him, He will be with you until the end of time!

What is keeping you from being a better witness?
Maybe you’re living in fear
Trust God’s promises to you in this passage.
Cast all your cares on Him
The Holy Spirit is with you
Maybe you don’t think you’re smart enough
Take the time to study
Be diligent in your Bible reading
Ask someone older in the church how they evangelize—learn from them
Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an exmaple among the believers
Maybe you don’t have a plan
Develop a plan to evangelize

Whatever you do, make it something easy to remember, portable, and clear to understand. We can do this with God’s help!
