Instrumental Music: Is it Scriptural?
“I have no objection to instruments of music in our worship, provided they are neither seen nor heard.” – John Wesley
Charles Spurgeon
Also, when asked why not to use musical instruments in worship, Spurgeon quoted . “I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.”
He then declared: “I would as soon pray to God with machinery as to sing to God with machinery.” (Spurgeon preached to 20,000 people every Sunday for 20 years in the Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle and never were mechanical instruments of music used in his services.)
When were Instruments first used in Worship?
History says 600 AD
Some Historians say as late as the 10th Century.
Worship
4 Types in the New Testament
Ignorant Worship
- For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you
Will Worship
- Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?
Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh
Vain Worship
- This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
True Worship
- God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth
Does it Matter How We Worship?
- Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law

Do We Have Authority?
- And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth
- And he is the head of the body, the church:
- And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
Are We Commanded?
- Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Nowhere in the NT did Christ command the apostles to practice Instrumental Music!
According to Truth?
- Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come
- But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you
- And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
According to Faith?
- So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God
- …for whatsoever is not of faith is sin
The Command or Example of Instrumental Music is not found in the NT words of faith!

No Commandment

Is Instrumental Music Scriptural?
We Must Conclude:
By Will of Men
Added by Men
- For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
- Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city
