Friendship: We all need friends

Insert Illustration of friend
Someone once said (Slide) “A friend is one who comes in when the world has gone out.” or then there is (Slide) Aristotle who said “What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.”
Better yet there are Jesus words
John 14:14–15 NASB95
“If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
John 15:14–15 NASB95
14 “You are My friends if you do what I command you. 15 “No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.
Of all the moral virtues you may have, may being a true friend be one!

I. True Friends are not limited by temporal things

(Slide) A. It is not limited by space - in our age of technology friend’s don’t have to be in the same place
(Slide) B. It is not limited by time - do you have a friend that you can go months without seeing and then when you do its like you were never apart?
(Slide) How about a good Biblical example?
Turn to and read from 1Sam18:1-4; then turn to 1Sam20 and highlight from there

II. True Friends are there in all circumstances

(Slide)
Galatians 6:1 NASB95
1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
(Slide) -take time to develop on this
Proverbs 27:6 NASB95
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.
(Slide) A true friend loves at all times, in all seasons and demonstrates hTrs love.

III. True Friends not swayed by slander

(Slide) A. True friend does not react to gossip, or slander
(Slide) B. True friend repeals and not repeat () - he does not repeat what he hears in gossip or slander
(Slide) - again a true friend will rebuke if necessary and defend too!
Proverbs 17:9–10 NASB95
9 He who conceals a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates intimate friends. 10 A rebuke goes deeper into one who has understanding Than a hundred blows into a fool.

IV. True Friends grow stronger by adversity

(Slide) A. Friendship moves into brotherhood at times of trouble
(Slide) B. Or maybe look at it as friendship becomes brotherhood as a result of adversity or trouble.
(Slide) C. Oftentimes adversity is a measuring stick for friendship
(Slide)
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 NASB95
9 Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. 10 For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. 11 Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? 12 And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.
