OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD
OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
To teach parents the importance of teach our children the Word and way of the Lord and children how they honor the Lord when they are obedient to parents.
God expects each of us to obey our parents and give them honor. I am not sure we really understand how serious it was when children disobeyed their parents under Mosiac Law.
18 “If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they discipline him, will not listen to them, 19 then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, 20 and they shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This our son is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.’ 21 Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones. So you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
During Old Testament times, disobedience to parents was considered to be punishable by death. Let’s read another verse about the result of being disobedient to parents.
20 If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness.
There were serious consequences for a child who refused to obey their parents in the Lord.
17 The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.
These verses from the Old Testament were not read to scare anyone, but to show the what happened when children failed to obey their parents in the Lord. Our generation desperately needs to learn what it means to obey your parents in the Lord. A good question to ask is, why should you obey your parents in the Lord?
IT IS RIGHT TO OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
The first thing Paul teaches the church in this verse is to “obey your parents in the Lord,” therefore, if for no other reason, our obedience to our parents should be “in the Lord,” which means we can honor and serve the Lord when we obey our parents.
The second thing Paul teaches the church in this verse is obedience to our parents is the right thing to do. Our generation is filled with children who are disobedient because they have a lack of respect for their parents. Jesus said these things would happen.
51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
The devil has always been and is the enemy of God and everything He has created and made. He is the greatest enemy of the home and works hard to destroy our family relationships. His greatest desire is to destroy every home. The reason the devil has been so successful in our generation is due to several very obvious reasons. First, our nation is filled with unbelievers who refuse to acknowledge God and His Word. Second, our government has changed the definition of a family and believes they own our children. Third, many educational institutions do not have the same respect for the home as they have had in the past. Fourth, Christians have failed to discipline their children properly and teach them God’s Word, especially in relation to the family.
The Bible also teaches us these are signs of the last days.
1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
Some comments I read in the Holman New Testament Commentary speak to the needs of our generation.
Holman New Testament Commentary: Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians & Colossians A. The Responsibilities of Families (vv. 1–4)
Without learning obedience from parents, children would run wild in society. All social order depends on this. In the Lord does not mean that children only need to obey Christian parents. Rather, it means that they are obeying the Lord when they obey their parents.
It is right to obey your parents in the Lord.
IT IS REWARDING TO OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD
2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Paul begins this comment with a quote from the Ten Commandments. The fifth commandment must be extremely important because it follows the commandments about our respect and relationship with the Lord and His day of worship. There should be no doubts about what the Lord thinks about the family, especially since the home was the first institution God ordained.
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
These verses are recorded before the fall of man in which means God intended for Adam and Eve “to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth” with children. God added pain to childbirth as part of the curse for Eve’s sin. We can safely conclude, God instituted the family, therefore, gave responsibilities and guidelines to each member of the family, including the children. To reward the obedience of children, the Lord gave a conditional promise. When children obey their parents, “in the Lord,” God promised “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
It is rewarding to obey your parents in the Lord.
IT IS RESPECTFUL TO OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
You have continually heard me say, the Lord has given men the responsibility of being the spiritual leaders in the home. Without question, it is the father’s job to raise their children “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” In many, maybe most, cases, the mother does more teaching in the home than dads.
8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching,
20 My son, keep your father’s commandment, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.
The summation of Scripture teaches us it is respectful to obey our parents in the Lord. It is respectful for us to listen to our parents while they are teaching us, especially in the way and Word of the Lord, with the intent to learn and apply. It is respectful to obey our parents in the Lord.
How will you apply this message in your life each day?
It is right to obey your parents in the Lord. Is there a desire in your heart to do the right thing for the Lord, your parents and yourself?
It is rewarding to obey your parents in the Lord. Do you want to be rewarded for obeying your parents in the Lord?
It is respectful to obey your parents in the Lord. Are you given the proper respect to the Lord and your parents by listening, learning and applying the things they are teaching about the Lord and about life?
