Crucified!
Matthew 27:24-
One of the most established facts of History is that Jesus of Nazareth was crucified on a hill called Golgotha outside of Jerusalem.
While many people know that Jesus was crucified it is amazing that more and more people know little about it.
It is said that the Romans did not invent Crucifixion, but they certainly perfected it.
The gruesome history of Crucifixion goes back centuries earlier in the ancient Near East.
The Medes and the Persians are said to have developed this tortuous death along with the Carthaginians.
Later it was adopted among the Greeks and finally the Romans.
Crucifixion is mentioned in ancient historical documents from about the 6th Century BC onward.
The earliest mention is 519 BC stating that Darius I, king of Persia, crucified 3000 political opponents in Babylon.
I am not going to take time to describe in detail the horrors that Jesus endured when He was crucified.
But we should all know that many Medical authorities agree that Crucifixion is the most inhuman and tortuous execution even devised by mankind.
And what is Amazing....Jesus knew full well that Crucifixion was the price that your sins and my sins demanded....And He paid it willingly.
OT Prophecies Concerning Crucifixion
Protoevangelum - First Messianic Prophecy.
While not mentioning Crucifixion this prophesy indicates that The Promised One, the Seed of the Woman, would deliver us from the Dominion of Satan and would do so at great cost to Himself.
Genesis 22:
The Principle of Substitutionary Atonement established as early as Abraham.
Exodus
E
The Passover was foreshadowing the work of the Messiah who would die and shed His blood so that God’s Judgement would Passover those who trust in Him.
Now we get more specific:
What is amazing about this Psalm is that it clearly predicts the type of suffering that the Messiah would endure.
It describes accurately the effects of Crucifixion even though it was written 500 years before Crucifixion would even be invented!
And it describes specific details of Christ’s crucifixion though written 1000 years before He would die on Golgotha’s hill.
These are but a few references in the OT regarding the Sacrificial Death of the Messiah and the Type of Death He would suffer.
All fulfilled in Jesus…in fact over 100 prophecies in the OT were fulfilled in Christ’s Crucifixion alone!
Now I want to take you back to and to unique events that were associated with His crucifixion, for in them is a Message.
Matthew 27:50-
One of the most established facts of history is that Jesus of Nazareth was crucified on a hill called Golgotha outside of Jerusalem.
However, what Jesus did that day was more than a historical footnote.
When Jesus died He did so not merely as the carpenter from Nazareth.
He died as the Son of God….literally,
God in the flesh.
And the power of that one selfless act is seen in the theological, physical, and spiritual manifestations that are recorded in this Gospel Account.
1. Theological Manifestation: the massive and thick curtain that separated the Holy of Holies from the outer chamber (called the Holy place) was torn from top to bottom.
No physical explanation can satisfy what happened here.
It was a divine act.
And it forever symbolized the truth that all people have access to God through faith in Christ!
2. Physical Manifestation: the earth quake!
While earth quakes do happen in Palestine…but far more infrequently than you can imagine, the timing of this earth quake seems to indicate planet earth bowing it’s head at the death of it’s creator.
It was a physical manifestation to a Universe shaking event.
3. Spiritual Manifestation: many tombs are opened and many bodies of believers are raised!
This is a foreshadowing of the Bodily Resurrection won by Christ’s death and that which will be secured three days hence.
The Theological, Physical, and Spiritual Manifestations that occurred at Christ’s death on the Cross shout to the Universe that this death was not a defeat….it
was a complete and utter Victory!
Many have looked at the events of the Passion Week, and the crucifixion itself, and have seen Jesus as the Victim of these events.
But when one considers all of the Old Testament Prophecies, and the steadfast determination of Jesus to go to the Cross for you and me, it is clear that Jesus was not the victim of these events….He was their Author!
Glory to God in the Highest!
One More Thing....
Because you and me and all your neighbors and all of mankind are sinners by Nature and by Choice, God’s Holiness demanded payment for our sins.
And the choice was this: We could pay the penalty for our sins by suffering eternally in Hell....OR....God Himself would Pay for our sins.
We have seen that God devised such a plan before the foundations of the earth, and that Jesus came to die on the Cross by crucifixion.
How do we know that our sins were paid for?
When Jesus died one of His last recorded words is translated “It Is Finished” that translates from a Greek Word....Tetelestoi.
Tetelestoi is a legal word and a word that was used in Commerce.
It meant that a contract was completed an obligation was met.
When an Invoice was fulfilled, a service was rendered, and payment was received, the Merchant would write Tetelestoi across the Invoice and sign his name.
Tetelestoi shouts to all creation that your sins and my sins are covered by the Blood of Jesus because Tetelestoi can be translated “Paid In Full.”
