Sermon Tone Analysis

I. All Authority has been given to Me.

A. looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

The Christian race:

In running, as in most sports, where you look is extremely important.

Some are preoccupied with what others are thinking and doing, especially in relation to us.

We do not disregard others or what they think about us.

2. What they think about us, including their criticism, can be helpful to us.

If we focus on others, we are bound to stumble.

3. We are to focus on Jesus because He is the author and perfecter of faith.

He is the pioneer or originator, the one who begins and takes the lead.

Jesus is the originator of our faith.

The focus of faith is also the originator of faith.

As Paul explains, “our fathers all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ”.

Go make disciples.

A. Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one?

(6) I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.

(7) So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.

(8) Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.

In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus compared the human heart to soil and the Word of God to seed.

a. Paul took this image and made it collective: the local church is a field that ought to bear fruit.

The task of the ministry is the sowing of the seed, the cultivating of the soil, the watering of plants, and the harvesting of the fruit.

2. Paul and Apollos were only servants

This means in every day life.

No matter where we are, we should be witnesses for Jesus Christ and seek to win others to Him.

3. Paul is discussing differences and similarities within the unity of the Spirit.

a. God has given each believer at least one spiritual gift, and this gift is to be used for the unifying and edifying (building up) of the body of Christ.

A spiritual gift is a God given ability to serve God and other Christians in such a way that Christ is glorified and believers are edified.

4. Why do we need a teacher?

Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, (2) as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, (3) if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

God’s Word has life, gives life, and nourishes life.

1.We should have appetites for the Word just like hungry newborn babes.

2. We should want the pure Word, unadulterated, because this alone can help us grow.

3. I have heard of child who didn’t like milk, so the mother add various syrups and power to make the milk taste different.

a.

For some children they still didn’t like milk.

b.

It is sad when Christians have no appetite for God’s Word, but must be fed religious entertainment instead.
