When Jesus turns up…
(NIV)
2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, x why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
Title: When Jesus turns up
PRAY
Story: of moment of unexpected need: locked out of house after colour conference with kids
RECAP STORY:
Wedding ran for 7 days A big deal; cultural importance Jesus and his disciples were travelling turns up and crisis hits just after; no more wine Mary calls for Jesus Mary is rebuked; have you tried to tell your mother off? Her next response; do WHATEVER he says size of water jars; ?? ceremonial water jars; used for washing
WHEN JESUS TURNS UP:
1) He arrives at just the right time
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
Wedding seemed good, no idea probs were on the way
2) Needs/Impossible needs/Jesus is ok being where the need is
3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
The cultural significance of this need:
Our need should remind of us of our humanity and his sovereignty
- without him we are left to our own devices. shamed, guilty, embarrassed,
Q - Ever found yourself in those moments; “God i need you to turn up!!”
The wonderful thing about our need is, that Jesus is right at home amongst our needs!
- He is not intimidated, worried or fearful of our need or lack… its His specialty!
STORY of big need - Athenaeum Theatre breakthrough
3) Your faith and obedience are a recipe for a miracle!
4 “Woman, x why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
When Jesus turns up he doesn't respond to our demands, but to our faith and obedience/patience.
We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
Mary knew that it was Jesus who could fix this so suggests he sorts it…
v3… Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, x why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
Jesus wasn't going to be moved into action because of her suggestion or demands…
Jesus will always move according to His will not to ours!
Q - How do you wait for your breakthrough?
- Sulking? Moody? Arguing? Patient?
Mary’s response leads the servants:
“do whatever he says…Do not try to press him forward; do not urge him on; he knows better than we do. Stand back, and wait till he speaks; and then be quick to obey every single word that he utters.”
How often do we miss a lesson from the rebuke of the holy spirit because of our pride… not getting what we want, when we want, we leave the class room before we’ve learnt the true lesson.
Jesus was saying, I'm not on your time table, be patient… trust me. I've got this.
Mary stays and then instructs the others not to repeat her lesson.. listen, trust, obey!
It wasn't her assumption or suggestion that activated the miracle, it was her faith that He could and the obedience of the servants!
Faith and obedience will cause:
You to be ready
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
Nearby
You to act
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
Is there a delay to when God asks you to act?
- praying for someone
giving encouragement being generous
STORY of acting immediately: giving away last $50 and getting it back within minutes
You to see it through
Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so,
Even when things are uncertain, when it doesn't make sense, you go because he said so!
Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
He has not called you to embarrass you!
He has not called you to see you fail!
He is the God who takes the available, no matter how obscure or unassuming it is and gives it purpose that ushers in the miraculous!
If He has said so, He shall!
When Jesus turns up:
4) He redeems beyond expectations
10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
Redeems the situation BEYOND expectations
The situation doesn't follow its usual course… the day is saved and the groom would have been happy with anything at this stage.. but Jesus doesn't just redeem the situation to the minimum or the expected, he redeems things BEYOND expectation!
Q - What in your life needs redeeming?
- it wont be according to the minimum or even expected but BEYOND!!
Your best is waiting for you;
- royal official
where he had been and what he had done made a way for even greater things to come to pass; your best is waiting for you!!
10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
Best was at the end waiting for them and the best is waiting for you!
